November | PPTH Clinic

"You know, I'm supposed to be checking in on clinic patients, not being distracted by my very handsome, apparently-hallucinatory boyfriend."

Chase has a new patient at the clinic, which leads to him breaking a few rules.

In the end, it's Jonathan's mad attempt to bring himself closer to Arabella that foists him forward into a mad arrangement of lights, music, people! He knows that sanity lingers just out of mind and that he will have to capture it back, but once he travels once more on this strange road (through a door and not a mirror), he thinks that if he cannot bring himself to Arabella, perhaps he can bring the fairy folk to him.

Jonathan Strange will host a party so luxurious and wonderful that they have no choice but to attend.

He uses magic to deck the lobby of the hotel with shimmering lights and stars that hang upon the ceiling in constellations and patterns that cannot possibly exist. Food dots each corner, but if the eye were to catch it properly, it would be noted that it's slightly off. The drink, however, is exact in its sumptuous rich red tones and sparkling vivacious notes.

Best of all, there is the music.

Harps and lutes and violins accompany the piano and encourage those to dance. More than that, the spell that Jonathan weaves ensures that all who pass the lobby feel the need to mingle and dance, not allowing for anyone to dawdle.

Arabella will come to him now. He knows it. He must only wait.

And there will be a party to maintain until then.

July / The Nexus

"I nearly died," he says. "But I got better, only it sort of made me look at life differently. Then, I turned up here." He shrugs, not sure how to explain this best. "I felt like everything in my life had been for nothing. So I started to sleep with anyone I could, just to feel something. I made a big mistake at home and..." He sighs. "She was a nun. Until I got to her," he explains, a pain in his eyes. "I don't think I can do this twice in a row; make someone break their vows for me, twice, especially if this ends badly."

Things start to get more serious when things like 'vow-breaking' gets brought up and Chase shares that it wouldn't be his first time dragging someone away from their promise.

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.

Obi-Wan was not the sort of man to shirk from something he was frightened of but this latest development was vexing and troubling to him. Upon encountering the door that, apparently, changed his gender he had tried on several occasions (under a cloak, mind) to change it back. His new form wasn't exactly displeasing in any way but it wasn't his and therefore it was a problem that had to be addressed.

Or, barring that, one to drown in alcohol until he was so drunk that he could forget about it. Since the former hadn't worked and he didn't have enough access to scientific equipment to work on changing his current nature, alcohol was simply going to have to numb his brain until he could find the strength to face his current situation.

He guessed the one saving grace of Jedi garb was the fact that it was intentionally gender neutral. Aside from size, his robes and tunics were exactly the same as those that would have been provided to a female knight and he felt like he would simply dress in them until the situation corrected itself; Obi-Wan was not keen on the idea of having to seek out a dress to wear while temporarily in possession of breasts.

He tried to think about how Qui-Gon would approach this situation through the living Force but everything was coming up blank. "Qui-Gon probably would have laughed and found someone to spend the day with," he muttered, staring at his woefully-empty glass. He lifted it to get the bartender to pour him another and pulled his cloak around him a little tighter, hoping to avoid notice.

Obi-Wan wasn't entirely sure that this was the most productive course of action.

(People had warned him about this; that the doors could have this sort of mind of their own in that they could grab you, like a door could kidnap a person and change their history. Chase sort of hadn't bought that, until...)

The door behind him slammed shut and it had an air of finality to it. Everything here was too quiet ever since the wall had been torn down and the news that everyone who was still contributing to the mission was to move on to Hong Kong. Sydney Shatterdome was shutting down, with all its personnel. Chase didn't exactly know whether he wanted to move on, given the fact that they probably already had their fair share of doctors there and it wasn't like he was a pilot or anything. He patched them up when they came back and yeah, he knows that's important work, but there's plenty of doctors.

Sighing, he heads up to the control centre and collapses in one of the ancient chairs that'll probably be left behind. He's not sure what's going to happen to everything, but he can't imagine it'll stay long. People might try and move further inland, in the desperate hopes that the Outback might stop the kaiju, but how long is that going to last?

Poking and prodding at a few of the now-defunct buttons, Chase reaches forward to grab one of the small toy-kaijus they'd always kept up here of Scissure, like they needed to remember why half of Sydney wasn't standing like it used to be.

So now it was stay here and wait or move on to Hong Kong.

Before he could take the time to process that decision, though, he heard the telltale scrape of a door that told Chase that someone else was lurking around -- to pillage or salvage or finish off work, he didn't know, but it made him feel somewhat relieved to know he wasn't the only one having trouble moving forward.

Anyone who passed the billiards room in the evening was treated to the sound of light laughter, billiard balls being struck with firm confidence, and the clatter of glasses and plates. The notice had been posted only that day for the tournament, but all were welcome to join in and play, while free drinks and small morsels of food were passed around for the enjoyment of all. The two billiard tables were rarely empty, even though the prize wasn't much to speak of, but pride was always a great motivator in people's ambitions and the ability to say you'd won was always on the line.

The billiards tournament was casual and many were lingering around, watching as the players took their turns. Waiters circulated the room with their trays, and every once in a while, new competitors were welcomed into the informal billiards competition that had begun only a few hours earlier.

Everyone was welcome, though some people would be leaving the event with a loss on their backs. It was lucky, then, that there was alcohol, food, and good company to help dull the defeats.

Slowly but surely over the last few months, Annie had been learning to trust the Nexus. Her faith was tentative, fragile, but she could not live the whole of her life inside a hotel room, no matter how lush or large. Not in general, and certainly not when she was only a month from being a mother. Holding Finnick's hand needed to be a comfort but not a crutch.

Still, it was an ongoing process, and she always opened doors with care.

From their windows she could see the sprawling gardens, her feet itching to wander amongst the blooms, but the space out there felt far too large, too open and exposed, and she hadn't quite managed going alone yet. Inside was seldom better, a maze of corridors and dead ends, but the library she liked. Quite a lot, actually.

Annie liked books to begin with, but the balcony was what she really loved, here. Sitting at the top of the spiral staircase, she could see the entire room and still get up easily with the help of the railing. A watchful bird on her perch.

She was there now, stack of books beside her on the top step and another open in her lap as she referenced the little notebook she'd taken to carrying around with her here. Everything was so different, and she was eager to learn as much as she could. The music she'd discovered on her telephone was particularly confusing.

Eyes narrowing at the page, Annie frowned. She glanced to her notes and then back again. "This makes no sense at all," she murmurred, and then jerked her attention up as someone else entered the room.

House would have a field day with this place.

Chase still found himself wondering if maybe he'd taken too many pain meds and now he was seeing people who were on TV and people who looked like Cameron out of the corner of his eye. Eventually, though, he'd figured out that this was his reality whenever he went through his bathroom door. Always the same door. Apparently, he couldn't go to the washroom without finding himself in a posh hotel.

It was a shame that he hadn't started planning for it because this time, he wandered into the breakfast buffet with his toothbrush in his mouth, wearing nothing but his boxers and a thin t-shirt and wishing that people would stop staring at him. He cleared his throat and waved awkwardly, trying to side-step until he was somewhat out of the spotlight. Eventually, he managed to find a seat at an empty table with his toothbrush set alongside his knife and fork like another utensil.

It was probably morning here like it was night, but he could really use a drink. Maybe he should bring House to his house and show him the door, but knowing his luck, it would stop working and he'd be forever known as the doctor who brought House into his bedroom. The hospital would never let him live that down, never mind House.

"Coffee?" he asked pleadingly to a passing waiter, wiggling his toes before he remembered that maybe he should find some money if he was planning on having a nice little inter-dimensional breakfast. He started to look around for someone who could help, but he was a barefoot guy in pajamas ordering coffee.

Yeah. His life was definitely getting stranger by the day.

Ichabod has always been plagued with an insatiable curiosity and in his quest to return to Sleepy Hollow as quickly as possible, he has often stumbled through doorways that lead to fantastic places. He tends to stick to the hotel as much as possible in the vain hopes that somehow Lieutenant Mills will find a way to contact him on his new mobile telephone (no such luck) but today he has taken a chance on a door that seems to have an excessive amount of cheering followed by periods of intense silence.

Beyond the door lies something he has not seen since his last trip to Scotland some years ago. There are two teams of men in brightly-colored garb calling plays and sweeping furiously as a granite stone whirls down the ice. It's a game of Scottish extraction called curling, one that he had been graciously allowed to play once among a group in Kilsyth long ago. It's always been an elegant game to him, full of strategy and tedium, and it seems he's wandered out near the players bench instead of into the stands with the adoring public.

There's another team there, one set to play after this current match is done and judging from their uniforms and accents, they seem to be American, possibly. It seems so strange that the Americans would be playing a Scottish game but who is he to judge? He, too, has chosen America as his country of residence so perhaps it isn't so strange as it might seem on the surface.

"You're the third," the captain tells him and Ichabod racks his brain for the rules of this particular game. He thinks he has a handle on it from that game so long ago but hopefully modern conventions haven't changed this one overly much; he isn't sure what could be complicated about something so simple and elegant as curling but the modern world has a tendency to confuse even the simplest of things.

"Right, yes. The vice-skip, then?" he asks, looking for clarification. Somehow, some way, he's become a member of the American curling team. May God have mercy.

[Either play with Ichabod or join him after the game while he's still decked out in Team USA gear.]

Everything hurts.

This is how Chase wakes up, ever since the anesthesia wore off and the pain of having a surgical blade shoved into your ribs comes screaming at you, trying to vault over the help of the morphine. It hurts and for a few selfish seconds, Chase thinks that maybe he'd trade the use of his legs if the pain would go away.

After the stabbing, Chase has been fairly out of it, but he didn't think he was on strong enough drugs to hallucinate a complete change in scenery.
