JULY | THE NEXUS LIBRARY

It's not a normal every-day thing to meet someone with the same name as you and a history that gets very close, but neither Belle are used to being normal.

Jacob felt like the Nexus was just another version of the island but it had one difference that made it a hell of a lot less bothersome - he could go home whenever he wanted. There was always a door back to La Push and back to the beaches and forests that he remembered and while he didn't usually run into anyone else he knew, it was enough. It would always be enough to be able to have the tang of salt and pine in his nostrils and to be a wolf again instead of just a human.

It was more than enough.

So he was content to stay in the hotel, for the most part, but occasionally he got the itch to go back through the thick wooden door that led to First Beach and today was one of those days. The shift from human to wolf was effortless at this point, as was the run from the door along the beach with the seaspray nipping at his paws. The rest of his pack wasn't here but that was all right. Jacob had never been bothered by his own company and, truth be told, he and the pack weren't always on the greatest of terms. He was always closest to Leah and Seth anyway so not seeing the others (even if it hurt to miss Quil and Embry) wasn't such a bad thing.

He watched the sun go down over the water and howled up at the full, full moon before heading deep into the forest to hunt. It was kind of barbaric (and he suspected it made Belle feel a little weird, though she never said anything) but it was just something he had to do to feel like himself again.

It was good to be back.

[OOC: Jacob left the door open so feel free to see him as a wolf or as a human in his home canon.]

"Please, Belle, I want to come and see!"

This was one of the most difficult partings she had yet had to make, but as Belle stood on one side of the Nexus, trying to dissuade a chipped teacup from following her into the hotel, she thought that this was never something she had ever imagined happening, not even when she cast herself in her own little stories in her head. "Chip, I'm sorry, but I don't know that you can even follow me in here," she says as kindly as she can manage.

Beyond that, she'd not sure she wants to bring all the beings in the castle into the Nexus. True, most people here didn't seem like they'd mind, but a talking armoire? It definitely wasn't the kind of hotel furniture people expected, even with mad shifting doors and outer space.

"Can't I come in for a little while and meet people?" Chip asks plaintively. "I don't like it when you're not around."

Belle smiles softly as she kneels down, her dress covering her as she scoots closer to the divide so that she's half in one world and half in the other, allowing Chip to hop into the palm of her hands. She knows that he wants her to come back to the castle, but things are so different and difficult now. She thinks that maybe she could still break the curse, but she doesn't know that she'd stay and given the choice of breaking the Beast's heart and putting off the decision, she's chosen the latter because she's happy with her life.

She thinks that it makes her a coward and she's ashamed for that, too. It's even more reason to continue hiding.

Belle's so lost in her thoughts that she doesn't even notice Chip jumping in her palms, trying to get someone's attention who's passing down the hall behind her. "Hi there!" Chip cries, bubbly and delighted. "Are you from here?"

Jacob mostly kept to a set schedule on the island. Wake up, teach his class if school was in session, work on anything at the Homestead that needed repairing and head home to spend time with Belle. It was a bit predictable and occasionally broken up by going to see Bella and the baby or Coraline but it was his life and he loved it.

The island, of course, occasionally decided to throw a wrench in those plans and if his way home became a swamp or there was a freak blizzard, Jacob tried to take it in stride and just keep moving on. It wasn't anything new after three years and some change, right? Except today. He'd pulled open the door to his and Belle's little house expecting to see his wife working on some new invention...and got greeted with a complete decor change.

So the new carpet was nice. So was the air conditioning, which wasn't available in abundance on the island (being inside a room without feeling hot and sticky and without the air so thick that he could breathe without drowning was a novelty) but he couldn't figure out how it got here. Was this some trick? Some temporary decorating change that was going away whenever the island's wacky magic decided to swing back to (relatively) normal? Jacob didn't know. Smarter people than him had been stumped by the island and he had never professed to be into researching or anything that involved reading or sitting still for very long.

But the biggest change about this place was the little undercurrent of power he felt. There was a little ripple, a little spark in the air and it just felt different than he'd felt in the three years since he'd shown up on the island and resigned himself to not being able to shift anymore. Maybe he'd learned to live without that part of himself but he'd never really accepted it and he sure as hell had never rejected it. Could it be? Was the wolf still under there after all and he was finally in a place where he could access it?

He turned the corner away from the front desk and let loose on his control, feeling his body shift and change into the wolf he hadn't been since showing up on the sandy beaches of Tabula Rasa all those years ago.

Finally.

[[See Jacob either before or after he shifts into a wolf - don't worry, he's not going to bite.]]

Okay. So this place was weird. All kinds of weird. She'd been inside, outside, covered every part of it she could find. She'd opened doors that went to all kinds of weird places - some just other rooms, some to places that felt so evil she slammed the doors and hadn't looked back. She'd seen Vegas, seen a mouse that could have only been Mickey, seen everything but the cell in Re-education or anything even remotely familiar.

She'd even tried her magic in the greenhouse and the outer grounds. It had worked, a little, but it hadn't felt right. Like there was something inorganic about the world they lived in.

It was information, true, but it was mostly useless. Still, it kept her mind busy and since she wasn't in any real hurry to leave, why overtax herself? She'd just learn, study, and file it away.

Sydney was on one such learning trip when she opened a door and found herself in a very familiar apartment. Adrian's apartment in Palm Springs. It looked just as she'd seen it the last time she'd been there, which told her that whatever timeline shift she and Adrian were on, the one that lived in this apartment belonged to the one she came from.

Since no one wanted the paradox that would erupt if the Adrian that knew her to be in re-education came in and found her here, Sydney decided to ditch right back out again, the same way she had when she'd found the scarier doors. Then something caught the breath in her throat. Hopper, frozen in his captured form, sitting on Adrian's kitchen counter.

She didn't think. She just grabbed him and darted back through the door. This was her timeline, and the dragon was stuck in his stone form until (or if) she was released from re-education. She couldn't leave him like that, frozen and suffering and no doubt starving. She told herself she'd put him back when she was sure he was fed and had stretched his wings.

Apparently, lying to herself was still a thing.

Find Sydney either in a hallway with a dragon statue or in the cafeteria feeding a small dragon pie. Hopper the dragon is the same size in life as it is in statue form and very protective of Sydney and Adrian.

Snape's life for the past several years has been one of dull routine. Wake up, get dressed, find something to eat, avoid everyone else, avoid the oppressive heat, avoid his terrible roommate, avoid avoid avoid. Sometimes, strange things would happen, like waking up in a new place, or with a new body, or with magic that was useless in the face of the abilities he knew he had.

But mostly, it was dull routine.

Until today.

Today should have been normal, like every other day. Nothing strange was happening on the island, at least not that he could tell. So he went about his routine. Clothes -- black, sober, as clean-pressed as he could get. Wand, tucked up his sleeve, just like every day, just in case. His fingers wrap around the doorknob to his room, and he twists and pulls...

And the room he steps out into is not the compound. Instead, he's standing in the front lobby of a hotel, much grander than anything he's seen in years.

Snape blinks. "You have got to be kidding me," he says. This is a new one for the island, this spontaneous changing of setting -- usually it happens overnight, when no one is aware of the change. He's never walked through one door and wound up somewhere else, instead.

Well, until now.

Snape folds his arms over his chest and glares out at the room, as he looks for a familiar face to demand an explanation from.

Ed took a step back, nearly stumbling as he stared at the lobby of the hotel he suddenly found himself in. He'd been hurrying full-tilt into the lab -- and well, this certainly wasn't the lab he'd been in before. There was no familiar pattern of alchemy on the walls either. Which meant this wasn't the lab.

It was only belatedly that he realized he was also by himself. Everyone he had been traveling with was gone. He spun around quickly, braid twisting momentarily into the air. Nope, he was by himself. He grabbed the door he had just run through, twisting it back open, but the familiar streets of Central didn't wait outside of it. The realization of what had happened sat coldly in his gut. But, it should have been impossible.

Hastily, he pressed both his gloved hands against up the wall next to the door. His alchemy crackled along the wall before a new door was called into being. Even as the energy poured through both his real and automail arm, he could feel that there was something off about it, as if his connection had been altered in some way. He hastily grabbed the knob of the new door, pulling that open as well. What was behind wasn't the same as the first door he had opened -- but still wasn't Central. He slammed it shut, moving automatically to create a second door, and then a third. Each one opened up to a new place, but none of them were the world Ed had just left behind.

"What the hell," he growled under his breath, unable to hide his rank irritation. He spun back around from the wall, facing the expanse of the hotel in front of him again. There was only one weapon he had left to him now.

"Alphonse!" he bellowed. And then, even though he didn't want to: "Hohenheim!"

A large, decorative sign situated prominantly in the lobby reads:

The Nexus Hotel
proudly presents its
ANNUAL NEW YEARS EVE PARTY

Event Location
Nexus Premises
6 PM - ?

1920's themed dress recommended, but not required for all guests

The sumptuous theme of elegance that typically surrounds the Nexus Hotel is out in full force on the evening of the 31st. With efficiency and very little said, a group had entered and snapped white tablecloths on long tables in the main lobby of the hotel, turning side-rooms into similar displays of elegance. Then came the food, followed by the alcohol, and the guests were quick to follow.

Drinks were on the lawn, in the hotel, making their way into the hands of party-goers who wore shining, shimmering, jewelled gowns of all eras, but only those from the 1920’s hung on a rack in the luggage room where hotel guests entered to check in and found themselves amidst a welcoming committee like none before.

In the skies between the hotel and the stars, fireworks shot off in hourly intervals, sparkling and accompanied by a great bang that the music from the band does its’ best to drown out (to no avail). And under those shimmering lights, the party for New Years Eve roared. It was not the only party, though, as a door had been propped open that led directly to the shining lights of Las Vegas, the gleaming neon of the strip beckoning any guests daring enough to try their hand at games of chance and luck.

It was easy enough to get turned around in the hustle and bustle of the bullpen when you weren't really paying attention, but Don was pretty sure this went a little beyond accidentally wandering into the wrong office. It was weird - one second, he'd been headed into his office, reading a wire report as he walked (also not his best idea - he'd seen plenty of interns run headlong into the glass walls that made up eighty percent of the office), and when he'd looked up he'd found himself here instead.

And he wasn't sure where "here" was, exactly. It was nowhere he was familiar with anyway.

Taking a second to backtrack, he tried to find his way back, but quickly realized it was pointless. The Newsroom was completely gone.

"Okay," he said to himself, setting down the wire report - it didn't matter where, he didn't really need it right now. He had bigger problems. Namely that he was pretty sure he was finally suffering a psychotic break. It had only been a matter of time, really, with everything that was going on and how little sleep he was getting. He was just surprised it hadn't happened sooner.

What were you supposed to do when you had vivid hallucinations due to lack of sleep, anyway? Ignore them? Play along? What was the protocol?

With nothing else to do, playing along seemed like his best bet, so he set off down the hallway in search of something or someone familiar.

Belle had a room in the Nexus Hotel.

She did, it was true, but some nights she forget to go back to it because there was such a beautiful library at her disposal. Her hut on the island had been limited by its space and she had cycled books in and out due to necessity, but this was sprawling and beautiful and so wonderful that it reminded her of the library that the Beast had given her. Some nights, she genuinely forgot to go back to her room and fell asleep on the plush couches of the library with fables and stories and far off lands lulling her to sweet dreams. Tonight, she awoke when dusk was beginning to spill into the windows of the hotel and a dry taste in her mouth told her that she'd been asleep longer than she wanted to be.

Absently, Belle pushed to her feet and tucked two tomes under her arm to make her way back upstairs to her room. If she kept falling asleep in the library, people were going to start thinking she was mad here. That wasn't a reputation she wanted to follow her.

Covering a yawn with her hand, Belle reached for the doorknob and tugged it open, staggering to a halt before it was too late. Staring into the abyss of somewhere she'd only read about in stories, she watched as legions marched up and down the seven hills, wearing clothes that hadn't been worn in years and years.

Belle took a step back and cautiously looked at the frame around the door, then took a step forward into the separation between thousands of worlds and one she had never seen before. "It's Rome," she breathed out reverently, still stuck staring. "That can't be, can it? It looks so real, can it truly be?"

I thought that being here would be a respite from what I had endured at home.

I was wrong. All of the time alone meant that I had too much time to be in my head. To be in Garret Jacob Hobbs' head. To be in Hannibal Lecter's head.

I lost myself once; I wasn't about to do it again.

So I learned quickly that I needed something to do, something that didn't involve answering endless questions and ceaselessly contemplating not only my existence but the very meaning of it, and/or whether or not this is all one extended fever dream.

There aren't many jobs here that I'm suited for. I don't need a psych eval to tell me that I would make an atrocious waiter or front desk attendant. And it was too much to hope that this place be by the sea, or even a large lake, where there would be motors to fix and society to ignore.

There are stables, though, and while I'm not an expert in horses, they're far more easier for me to deal with than people. I know how to deal with skittish, scared animals: some would say that I am one.

It gives a sense of purpose to my day, at least, no matter how steep the learning curve for me. I can't just hide away in my room, no matter how much I would prefer that. It wouldn't get me any closer to the truth -- about the Nexus, about why I'm here, about what happened to me at home.

So, for now, horses it is.

[ feel free to find will coming/going to the stables, or at the stables themselves, which are on the east end of the nexus grounds. ]
