In the interest of full disclosure, I haven't actually done much to assimilate into the Nexus. My sister loved it here and loved everything about being in the hotel but I didn't trust things I didn't understand and I had just gone from one crazy bottleneck to another without being able to see my family in between. It was disorienting and confusing and I spent most of my time trying to figure out a way to get back to the caves and back to my brother.

I wasn't successful.

I had read somewhere once that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result and now, finally, after two months of trying and trying to get back home I was finally giving up. Done. That was it. I was just going to embrace my new screwy life in the hotel and just enjoy the fact that I did have Wanderer and Nick even if I couldn't get back to Jamie and the others. I just wished I could open the door once, just long enough to shepherd my family and friends into safety before closing it again permanently. It wasn't meant to be.

With my newfound lease on life, I decided it was high time I finally got a job. I had been subsisting on the buffet and trying my best to make everything I had last as long as possible but now I wanted to work. I wanted something I could put my hands on, something to help me work out the stress and frustrations of the day. I tried my hand at waiting tables but it turned out that I was terrible at it. I don't really have a memory for orders and working quickly didn't come easily to me. After throwing my tray down and storming out, I wound up joining the maintenance and grounds crew. That was something I was good at. I liked fixing things and I had a decent knowledge of minor repairs after so long on the run. I could hack that.

That was what found me outside just before dawn started pinking the sky, laying mulch in one of the many gardens at the Nexus. It was easier to do this before the sun got high in the sky and it was hot and I wanted to take advantage of it.

Outside of the Nexus Hotel, waiters and hotel staff had begun to set up the umbrellas and the tables in the middle of the day. Soon, it became clear that something was happening in the shadow of the Nexus. White tablecloths were draped on the tables and drinks and food were brought out with the help of several waiters and servers, staffing tables with hot and cold foods beside bartending stations. Summery drinks in bright, neon colors are laid out one by one and soon, the afternoon light casts a radiant look on the scene.

Music plays faintly in the background and a note at the front desk invites all the Nexus guests to head outside and join in on the summer party, which promises to continue going as long as there are people to stay and continue keeping the warm atmosphere rolling.

On the lawn, social games had been set out -- lawn bowling, croquet, and tables were set up with chairs for anyone who didn't quite have the will or the spirit to get into such games. Soon, a small number of people had begun to mill around, but as with all parties, there's always room for more.

Every month, Alex usually came to the same conclusion.

Sure, she could stick it out at home and pay her rent in pennies or in showing off her ankles to her landlord or trying to barter away Jane's organizing (which, while it had worked, is one of those go-tos that kind of get exhausted after a while). Or, she could head back to the Nexus and pick up a couple of shifts at the shop where she got to people watch and they paid her. Not only that, but she actually got to serve customers and she'll tell you this, sometimes she kind of forgets what that's like.

Still, there's enough lulls that she doesn't get super stressed and this is one of them. She's leaning her elbows forward, people-watching with a dazed expression on her face as she tries to make up stories about them, wondering where they came from and what cool histories they have. "Spy," she says when a brown-haired man passes. "Gay porn," she adds, when a blond one heads the other way.

Every once in a while, she has to help people, but she always gets back to that same people-gazing position from the shop counter, kind of missing Max and Penny because they would totally be good at this game. They were way better at these sorts of things than Alex was because she always hit a wall when her brain tries to go a little more than ten miles per hour.

Whatever, she thinks. It's not like she needs to be smart to watch cute guys. That only takes your eyeballs and she's got two of those, thank you very much.

Nick and anger had never been a good combination. On the island it had caused him to damage more than one tree and had probably been the impetus for the island's January gift one year of a heavy bag. A bag he'd damaged and had to reinforce a few times as the island played "Fuck With Nick's Head" on more than one occasion. That, and the near state of perpetual sexual frustration, he'd been one on-edge human on that island and he'd been glad for the release, and that he hadn't been able to touch his demon powers.

Now. Well. Now it was a whole different party. Because the same issues were there, but he had full access to his demon powers.

Powers that had nearly caused him to take out the Nexus' gym before he'd teleported himself to Bella's forest door and taken himself away from humans. His only thought had been to go somewhere the odds were low he'd set off some kind of temporal rift or end the world before he had a chance to get the rage under control.

Bella had found him there, of course, fresh from her own hunt and though she didn't know him from the island, they'd talked about his time there, and his true nature, enough for her to guard the door to keep him safely in the forest. He was glad for it since she was one of the few people here strong enough to restrain him, and one he couldn't hurt in return, in mind or in body. She didn't even flinch when he'd gone full demon form on her a few times.

She must have heard enough of what he said during his rage ranting because after a few minutes, she offered herself as a substitute, a target for the protective anger boiling through him. Focusing on that, and an hour long brawl, had worked to get him off the ledge, as it were.

"Are you sure you'll be okay?" she asked when they stepped back into the hotel. Her face had been as beautiful as ever, and the only sign that she'd sparred a demon for an hour was in her torn clothes and mussed hair.

"I'll be fine," Nick responded. "The worst of it is gone. Besides, you're going to be listening for me anyway, and you can come rescue me."

Bella smiled and nodded. "You got that right."

Nick leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Go do whatever you were going to do before you decided to spend an afternoon demon fighting. I've got a different vampire to find."

He left her with a light squeeze to her ice-cold hand and turned to stalk the corridors, using every sense he had to find the using vampire bastard. To everyone else who walked close to him, he just growled out, "not a good time."

Find Nick in full prowl - he's in human form, but his eyes may turn blazing yellow at times; or find Bella looking like she's stepped out of a tornado, with ripped clothes and really messed up hair.

Something about this place scratches at Sarah's insides, like a rusty shiv that's digging at her and trying to get inside her mind, try to make her doubt her surroundings. Four days ago, she'd been on an inescapable island, struggling to cope with the losses that always plagued her life, and in the middle of recovery from her cancer.

Now, she's standing outside a gift shop, numb and motionless, like she's stood every day since she got here. Her attention is on all the metal around her in the form of cameras, in the form of computers, and other electronics that might seem simple to others, but immensely dangerous to her. The cell phone that had been hers, apparently, has been broken apart, pieced together, and hidden in one of the stray guest rooms.

Even the staff here don't seem right, like something is off. It could be her paranoia speaking for her, but there's something about things here that set her heart racing faster and make her doubt that she's made a trade to something better. She cracks her knuckles again and takes a steadying breath, sliding into her seat in the lobby while digging out her notebook. She's been people watching since she got here, taking notes in cryptic shorthand to try and see who's in control and who might know something.

She needs to get back to John and she's heard whispers that it's possible, here. It's nothing more than snippets of conversations about 'going home', but it's enough to keep Sarah interested, enough to keep her from being too bold and making a move. If she's going to get home to John for the first time in over three years, she has to do this right.

Her eyes are intent and steady on the next person who walks in the front door and it's in pursuit of answers that Sarah loses focus as to how long she's been staring, unblinking, unflinching, and unerringly steady. It's the sort of thing that gets you noticed and she jerks her gaze away (too late), hoping that staring too long won't cost her too much.

Jacob mostly kept to a set schedule on the island. Wake up, teach his class if school was in session, work on anything at the Homestead that needed repairing and head home to spend time with Belle. It was a bit predictable and occasionally broken up by going to see Bella and the baby or Coraline but it was his life and he loved it.

The island, of course, occasionally decided to throw a wrench in those plans and if his way home became a swamp or there was a freak blizzard, Jacob tried to take it in stride and just keep moving on. It wasn't anything new after three years and some change, right? Except today. He'd pulled open the door to his and Belle's little house expecting to see his wife working on some new invention...and got greeted with a complete decor change.

So the new carpet was nice. So was the air conditioning, which wasn't available in abundance on the island (being inside a room without feeling hot and sticky and without the air so thick that he could breathe without drowning was a novelty) but he couldn't figure out how it got here. Was this some trick? Some temporary decorating change that was going away whenever the island's wacky magic decided to swing back to (relatively) normal? Jacob didn't know. Smarter people than him had been stumped by the island and he had never professed to be into researching or anything that involved reading or sitting still for very long.

But the biggest change about this place was the little undercurrent of power he felt. There was a little ripple, a little spark in the air and it just felt different than he'd felt in the three years since he'd shown up on the island and resigned himself to not being able to shift anymore. Maybe he'd learned to live without that part of himself but he'd never really accepted it and he sure as hell had never rejected it. Could it be? Was the wolf still under there after all and he was finally in a place where he could access it?

He turned the corner away from the front desk and let loose on his control, feeling his body shift and change into the wolf he hadn't been since showing up on the sandy beaches of Tabula Rasa all those years ago.

Finally.

[[See Jacob either before or after he shifts into a wolf - don't worry, he's not going to bite.]]

House would have a field day with this place.

Chase still found himself wondering if maybe he'd taken too many pain meds and now he was seeing people who were on TV and people who looked like Cameron out of the corner of his eye. Eventually, though, he'd figured out that this was his reality whenever he went through his bathroom door. Always the same door. Apparently, he couldn't go to the washroom without finding himself in a posh hotel.

It was a shame that he hadn't started planning for it because this time, he wandered into the breakfast buffet with his toothbrush in his mouth, wearing nothing but his boxers and a thin t-shirt and wishing that people would stop staring at him. He cleared his throat and waved awkwardly, trying to side-step until he was somewhat out of the spotlight. Eventually, he managed to find a seat at an empty table with his toothbrush set alongside his knife and fork like another utensil.

It was probably morning here like it was night, but he could really use a drink. Maybe he should bring House to his house and show him the door, but knowing his luck, it would stop working and he'd be forever known as the doctor who brought House into his bedroom. The hospital would never let him live that down, never mind House.

"Coffee?" he asked pleadingly to a passing waiter, wiggling his toes before he remembered that maybe he should find some money if he was planning on having a nice little inter-dimensional breakfast. He started to look around for someone who could help, but he was a barefoot guy in pajamas ordering coffee.

Yeah. His life was definitely getting stranger by the day.

The dreamshade burns through his blood.

It's not that Charming hadn't believed Hook when he'd described the sheer torture and agony that the poison would cause in his veins, but it had only been the lightest of scratches. It hadn't been enough to tell Emma and Snow about, but now he was beginning to worry. When they'd entered Neal's cave, Charming had followed along and instead of the cave, he'd been back in the hotel, clasping his side and staring around him as panic gripped him, fighting with relief.

He could rest here. Maybe he might even be able to slow the poison using some sort of medicine they had readily available here that wasn't in Neverland, but the fear that the cure is only on the shores of that dark island grips him and holds the panic in.

Angrier than he's been in ages, Charming takes it out on the nearest wall, putting his fist through and creating a hole that has his torso singing with pain as the dreamshade lances through his body. He supposes that he might need to start taking it easy, given that the bloodflow would only distribute the poison faster.

It's a sad, horrible state of affairs, but for the first time since Charming had set sail to Neverland, he finds himself knowing that his best chance is a world away and it's Hook. He stares at the damaged wall, regretting his actions. "Sorry," he says, to the passers-by. "I'll clean it up, if you give me a moment."

For the first time since he'd died and gone to Hell (for real, not any of those blunders that came after) no one was actively attempting to separate Crowley's head from his shoulders, and he really appreciated that. Being a demon was a dangerous existence, and it became even more so when your chosen occupation involved stepping on a lot of other demons to maintain it. It was true that as King of Hell he had more protection than most, but the amount of enemies went up exponentially with that promotion. That is to say, everyone was an enemy, and even if your employees didn't have the smarts or the guts or even the desire for the job they still got treasonous little ideas swimming around in their heads from time to time, and it was a requirement to crack them open if that was the case.

And now he had Abaddon, who was not only immortal, but incredibly irritating. He'd almost like her if it weren't for the fact she was gunning after his job, and his life.

He was aware of other universes and other worlds, not that he ever intended to go to any of them - he was fine in the one he was in, more or less. Besides, from what he understood you had to be all-powerful, like Death, or have some sort of key, like the one to Oz, to get to any one of the millions of fancy little spots in the universe worth going to. But this hotel presented itself to him, almost like a gift. Once he had ascertained that this was, truly, some sort of pocket universe existing beyond his own realm, and not some incredibly elaborate trap to kill him (so elaborate he would in fact be pretty flattered at all of that effort) he did the first thing any respectable demon would do: he looked for the bar.

Sitting at the counter and armed with three fingers of scotch (not Craig; that's the only reason he knew he had not stumbled accidentally into a deserted, angel-less Heaven (though that would also have been nice, and endlessly amusing, because)) Crowley turned to the nearest living, breathing, upright creation, which presumably was also equipped with a brain and the faculties for speech. "And how long have you been here, then?" he asked, bluntly. He could be a very charming, subtle creature when he wanted to, but that usually wasn't as fun.

It had been a gambit to reveal herself to Link and Zelda had thought at the time it’d been a wise one; the Hero of Time deserved to know of her deception and her aid as he cleansed Hyrule of Ganondorf’s poison and she knew he’d be tight lipped about her whereabouts.  What she did not consider, however, was that Ganondorf had eyes and ears in even the most sacred of places and the ambush at the Temple of Time hadn’t been a possibility Zelda had considered.

For a woman with a vast intellect, sometimes she could be quite dense.  His laugh froze her to the very marrow of her bones, leaving her stock still and afraid to change forms lest he use the opportunity to injure Link or, worse, recover the Triforce of Wisdom for his own vile purposes.  She could not let the Triforce fall to him no matter what and if that meant keeping the form she’d been born to, so be it.

The restraints were something of a bit of irony; rosy colored crystals conjured by Ganondorf himself that wouldn’t have been out of place in one of Zelda’s own spells, coupled with a vacuum inside that seemed to draw from emotion and not the air.  It stifled her, but only to make her hopeless, and Zelda thought idly that perhaps that was worse.  Should she die in his clutches a valiant death, railing against the dark and all he stood for, she’d die a martyr.  Should she die a quiet death having given up on the world as a whole, nobody would mourn that at all.  After all, Hyrule had no queen, not any longer, and had not for some time.  Ganondorf was actually quite clever in that macabre little respect.

For all that he’d paralyzed her above the battleground he’d chosen to launch his final assault (her own palace, no less. Such nerve he had!), he couldn’t force her to watch.  Zelda let her eyes drift shut, the magical meditation she’d perfected when in the body of Sheik flowing into something more mundane and born of exhaustion in the body of Zelda.  She imagined some place far away, a vista untouched by the wicked king and his armies.

She pressed against the crystal that held her trapped, focusing all her will upon it and was pleasantly surprised when it seemed to give way and she fell to the ground. It was less than graceful, to be sure, but she was free. Of course, freedom meant very little at this juncture; she was still within the belly of the beast and there was no real way out. On a lark, she scrambled toward a forgotten door that led from the Temple back toward a graveyard long left untended. There was a path beneath one of the royal tombs that led straight to the palace, a path that Zelda hadn’t taken since she was a young girl. Pray that it is unblocked, she thought to herself, scrambling as fast as she could. If she were free, perhaps she could launch an offensive and aid Link.

Once she stepped through the door, however, she was not in the graveyard behind the Temple of Time. There were no royal tombs or broken down headstones, merely the carpeted corridor of some other building. What did this mean? How could a familiar path that she’d taken time and time again as a young girl change so much in seven years? While she’d half expected it to be blocked, she hadn’t expected it to lead somewhere else entirely!

There were people milling about these halls, seemingly going about the normal business of a day and Zelda could not comprehend that. It had been a long time since the Castle Town had actual citizens in it; much of Hyrule’s society had moved up into the hills and away from the conquered palace and Ganondorf’s influence. Zelda schooled her features into something approaching calm even though her heart still beat rapidly with the thrill of her escape.

“Excuse me,” she said, catching the attention of the closest person. “I seem to have taken a wrong turn. Can you tell me where I am, precisely? It’s a little embarrassing but sometimes when I have restless sleep, I tend to wander the halls a little.”

Hopefully it was a lie that would pass muster. Not often did Zelda fall asleep fully clothed in a gown worthy of the Hylian court but perhaps just for a moment this person could believe she had laid down for a short nap and been plagued with sleepwalking. It was a common enough affliction and one she herself had suffered as a child. It would not do to reveal just how truly disoriented she was at the moment.

The best way to sell a lie, after all, was to wrap it in the truth.

Too good to be true, that's what this place is.

Or that's what Faith decides on her third pass through its halls. Through the lavish reception area, past that long as hell dining room table, and then the stocked buffet table -- Faith had stuck to the walls and the shadows, playing recon for almost an hour.

"Swear to god I'm not making a twins joke..." She mutters to herself as she steps out in full view, choosing to invite whatever trouble might come her way. Sure, maybe she'll sample some of the food just sitting out for the taking. Peek into some rooms, maybe try to find the head. She'll wind up at the bar, though, asking if the tender accepts euros. Long day like this one means she's definitely going to need a drink.

Or ten. Then she can figure out if this is a vacation on a platter or some kind of wacko fever dream she's got to fight her way out of.

Though the main dining hall didn't bear the typical Valentine's Day decoration, it had been changed enough to subtly reflect the mood through small fairy lights hanging from the walls and twinkling in the dimmed light of the grand room. Each place was set with the finest silver cutlery and adorned with bold red plates. Up and down the table, seats awaited their guests to enjoy the five course meal, roses set in vases every few feet along the table.

At the head, a string quartet band played quietly so as not to disrupt the conversation and waiters kept wine glasses full, empty plates cleared, and worked to keep the mood high. As the sun began to set, the dinner began to be served.

Hiccup was plenty used to weird. After all, he’d grown up amongst vikings too stubborn to move away from their inhospitable spit of dragon-infested land. Then he’d lived three years on a magic island that was prone to changing at a whim as it played host to gods, men, and manifestations of insanity.

This? This was a whole new level of weird.

Not the breakfast bar. That was fine. In fact, it was really good, especially the ready supply of bacon. The change of location was the strange part, as well as the change of faces that came with it. Wandering the hall, Hiccup had seen a few familiar and unfamiliar faces alike. The lack of recognition or population made it pretty obvious this wasn’t the Island in one of its changeable moods, but that only answered one of several questions as he mulled over his toast, eggs, and coffee.

When he’d arrived in the lobby this morning, he’d been readily presented with a hotel key that unlocked a very big, luxurious bedroom as well as a new smartphone. It was as if this place, wherever it was, had plans to keep him here for the long haul. He wasn’t sure if he was particularly thrilled about the change, but never let it be said that he wasn’t adaptable if necessary.

Wrapping up some more bacon in a napkin for Toothless, he stood up, neatly avoiding a collision with someone else with the same idea. “Sorry! Excuse me!”

Last Tuesday, Fiona had finished a morning shift at the Smoking Room, had a quick shower in her room, and headed back home to the slushy Chicago streets. Ever-mindful of the constant march of time at the Nexus, she'd only been home for about twelve hours before she'd opened the door to head back, only to find herself faced with the tiny closet of a bathroom that she'd last seen months before. It had been her go-to door, had never failed.

That was nearly three months ago.

When she'd opened the bathroom door today, it had been to use the toilet. Standing on the threshold, she'd stared with sober finality out at the cool, glittering lobby, hesitated a moment, and then stepped through, slamming the door behind her. She glanced toward the front desk. It was still Tuesday morning.

Upstairs, she'd shucked off her pencil skirt and heavy winter coat, and had soaked in a whirlpool tub for almost an hour. Afterward, she'd tried to open a door home so that she could collect some more clothes, planning an extended stay. Three times she'd tried, and it hadn't worked. She'd stared at the door for awhile, and then wrapped herself in a fluffy bathrobe and went calmly downstairs to buy a bathing suit from the shop.

Minor spoilers for Shameless 4x04 )

There was no outdoor swimming pool here and no beach, so Fiona had carried a towel and a six pack down to one of the gardens and spread herself out next to the soothing gurgle of a fountain. On her back in a black string bikini, dark sunglasses obscuring her eyes, she reached for her first beer, intent on drinking them all.

Fuck it. Just fuck it all.

A large, decorative sign situated prominantly in the lobby reads:

The Nexus Hotel
proudly presents its
ANNUAL NEW YEARS EVE PARTY

Event Location
Nexus Premises
6 PM - ?

1920's themed dress recommended, but not required for all guests

The sumptuous theme of elegance that typically surrounds the Nexus Hotel is out in full force on the evening of the 31st. With efficiency and very little said, a group had entered and snapped white tablecloths on long tables in the main lobby of the hotel, turning side-rooms into similar displays of elegance. Then came the food, followed by the alcohol, and the guests were quick to follow.

Drinks were on the lawn, in the hotel, making their way into the hands of party-goers who wore shining, shimmering, jewelled gowns of all eras, but only those from the 1920’s hung on a rack in the luggage room where hotel guests entered to check in and found themselves amidst a welcoming committee like none before.

In the skies between the hotel and the stars, fireworks shot off in hourly intervals, sparkling and accompanied by a great bang that the music from the band does its’ best to drown out (to no avail). And under those shimmering lights, the party for New Years Eve roared. It was not the only party, though, as a door had been propped open that led directly to the shining lights of Las Vegas, the gleaming neon of the strip beckoning any guests daring enough to try their hand at games of chance and luck.

Anna's missing. She didn't come down from the mountain.

And now she's trapped here, bringing more snow and fear rushing down on Arendelle. Worries swirl through her, fast and dense, like the unrelenting storm outside. If she stays here much longer, Elsa knows that the storm will only get worse. There's no thawing it; she doesn't know how. All she's ever known how to do with her powers is clamp down on them, praying they don't burst free.

All her fear and worry manifest around her, turning the floor and walls icy and brittle. The cuffs, with their cold iron take longer to break apart but everything succumbs to ice eventually.

The manacles broken, Elsa breaks through the wall and runs across the icy fjord. She can't thaw the storm, but she can take it somewhere else and pray that it follows her instead of spreading.

But there's no ice beneath her feet. There's a thick red carpet and a door swinging behind her. It's an unfamiliar hallway and, already, Elsa's fear is sending ice out across the floor beneath her. Someone's approaching and she fears it.

"S-Stay back!" Elsa cries. "I can't make it stop!"

All things considered, Nick thought as he walked back through the corridor towards the pirate door, he probably shouldn't have brought a vampire with him. In his defense, his intentions had been wholly honorable. He knew Bella was having issues with boredom here - being completely unable to sleep she had a lot of hours to fill.

When he'd found the door that opened into a cabin on a pirate ship, he'd thought she'd have a good time. And they had.

Until two of the lackeys got into over something stupid and they'd both drawn swords. They'd taken their swipes at each other and really, it had all been straightforward enough. They weren't all that skilled at it.

Unfortunately, unskilled equated blood being drawn. Lots of blood being drawn.

Bella had good control, exceptional control, but an alcoholic into a vat of whiskey and bad things will happen.

He'd been able to use his powers to bind her and his strength to carry her back through the door and carry her through the hotel to the door to her forest. He didn't know how she'd fare running through the forest in the pirate wench's outfit he'd found in the cabin for her, but at least she wouldn't have human blood in her system and he wouldn't be disposing of a body. He felt he owed as much to Edward...even if he wasn't here, even if this Bella wasn't the same as the one he knew on the island.

Now that she was off hunting, he was in the mood to get back to some piracy.

Find Nick headed back to the pirate door in full pirate gear, with eyepatch. You can also find Bella coming out of a different door wearing her own pirate gear but probably with a few leaves and twigs in her hair and blood on her clothes.
