JULY | THE NEXUS LIBRARY

It's not a normal every-day thing to meet someone with the same name as you and a history that gets very close, but neither Belle are used to being normal.

This was, perhaps, the best part about being in this place. It was the books - endless amounts of them, from who knew where... many from the past, perhaps some even from the future. Even the library that Rumple had made for her paled in comparison to this one, not that it truly mattered. For Belle, even a simple bookshop held enough wonder for her. The written word was a powerful thing, and she perhaps gave books more credit than anyone else she knew. She loved them, but she was wary of them also. Books were knowledge. Knowledge was power. And power corrupted.

Not that such dark thoughts pierced her enjoyment of the place at the moment. No; just then she was combing through the shelves with intense interest. Stories and tomes and encyclopedias were all well and good, but just then Belle felt like brushing up on her skills and she was eagerly perusing a section of different lands and countries. Many she had never heard of. In her arms there were already two books on ancient languages, and she was trying to find a companion for them which might help her understand the culture they originated from.

She was so preoccupied that when she saw, from the corner of her eye, a cloth-covered blue spine stamped with the right symbols, she didn't pause as she lunged for it. It happened to be on the opposite side of the aisle, however, and she ended up shouldering someone who had inconveniently been in her blind spot.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" she exclaimed. "Are you alright?"

Ruby had gone to her room smelling of cheeseburgers often enough that one might assume she grew tired of them, though the one piled high in front of her could easily make a lie out of that. She had the day off from the Smoking Room but was still tucked away in one of its booths, a plate bearing a half-eaten cheeseburger and a scattering of fries next to a mostly smeared ketchup puddle in front of her. In one hand was a copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night, and while she kept glancing up and around to see who had joined her for lunch in the bar, she was enjoying the book very much. Reading was not a past time she made enough time for, she’d decided, and her New Year’s resolution had been to tackle the knee-high pile of “To Read” books that had gathered on her side of the bed she shared with Graham before she or he tripped over them for the millionth time.

She glanced up and around at the bar once more as she selected another fry and swirled the tip in ketchup, bringing it to her mouth for a bite before casting her attention back down to the book. She had heard somewhere that Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda was allegedly responsible for a good deal of his work, this book included, and she thought she could believe it. This book had the sort of prose that was not frilly but touchable, the sort of “fiction” one might write after taking a good, long look at both themselves and their marriage. A definite feminine touch, but who really knew in the end? All she was really sure of was that the story had proven to be brilliant and insightful and sad, and while Ruby usually preferred adventure stories and this one was definitely not that, it was holding her attention marvelously.

Idly, she moved to wipe the salt from her fingers on a napkin before turning a page, glancing up once again between the break of one chapter and the start of another. She’d opted for a pint of beer with her burger, and nearly jolted at the realization that she’d been neglecting it all too much between her people watching, her burger, and her book. She sat the book face down on the table, still open and far away from her food to keep from either wetting the pages or getting them dirty, and picked her beer up for a nice, long drink.

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.
