November | PPTH Clinic

"You know, I'm supposed to be checking in on clinic patients, not being distracted by my very handsome, apparently-hallucinatory boyfriend."

Chase has a new patient at the clinic, which leads to him breaking a few rules.

The door had once been an ordinary door to one of the academy rooms on Yavin IV. But when he opened it this time, it had something unfamiliar, something that shouldn't exist on the other side. It looked like a hotel, but more primitive than he was used to. Luke reached out in the Force, testing, probing, trying to sense any potential danger. He didn't, but he could sense something more, something that confused and intrigued him. It was a Force presence he'd felt before, but not since he was young and raw, barely even aware of what he was capable of.

He stepped forward slowly, cautiously, Artoo rolling along behind him. "Come on, Artoo, I think it's safe. Very strange though. I know it isn't part of the Academy. It definitely shouldn't be here."

What alarmed him was that he felt his connection to Mara and Ben fade as he entered. They were always connected, always able to sense each other. He wasn't certain whether to stay or or not. Could he go back? The door had closed, though, and it didn't seem to want to let him.

July / The Nexus

"I nearly died," he says. "But I got better, only it sort of made me look at life differently. Then, I turned up here." He shrugs, not sure how to explain this best. "I felt like everything in my life had been for nothing. So I started to sleep with anyone I could, just to feel something. I made a big mistake at home and..." He sighs. "She was a nun. Until I got to her," he explains, a pain in his eyes. "I don't think I can do this twice in a row; make someone break their vows for me, twice, especially if this ends badly."

Things start to get more serious when things like 'vow-breaking' gets brought up and Chase shares that it wouldn't be his first time dragging someone away from their promise.

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.

Obi-Wan was not the sort of man to shirk from something he was frightened of but this latest development was vexing and troubling to him. Upon encountering the door that, apparently, changed his gender he had tried on several occasions (under a cloak, mind) to change it back. His new form wasn't exactly displeasing in any way but it wasn't his and therefore it was a problem that had to be addressed.

Or, barring that, one to drown in alcohol until he was so drunk that he could forget about it. Since the former hadn't worked and he didn't have enough access to scientific equipment to work on changing his current nature, alcohol was simply going to have to numb his brain until he could find the strength to face his current situation.

He guessed the one saving grace of Jedi garb was the fact that it was intentionally gender neutral. Aside from size, his robes and tunics were exactly the same as those that would have been provided to a female knight and he felt like he would simply dress in them until the situation corrected itself; Obi-Wan was not keen on the idea of having to seek out a dress to wear while temporarily in possession of breasts.

He tried to think about how Qui-Gon would approach this situation through the living Force but everything was coming up blank. "Qui-Gon probably would have laughed and found someone to spend the day with," he muttered, staring at his woefully-empty glass. He lifted it to get the bartender to pour him another and pulled his cloak around him a little tighter, hoping to avoid notice.

Obi-Wan wasn't entirely sure that this was the most productive course of action.

(People had warned him about this; that the doors could have this sort of mind of their own in that they could grab you, like a door could kidnap a person and change their history. Chase sort of hadn't bought that, until...)

The door behind him slammed shut and it had an air of finality to it. Everything here was too quiet ever since the wall had been torn down and the news that everyone who was still contributing to the mission was to move on to Hong Kong. Sydney Shatterdome was shutting down, with all its personnel. Chase didn't exactly know whether he wanted to move on, given the fact that they probably already had their fair share of doctors there and it wasn't like he was a pilot or anything. He patched them up when they came back and yeah, he knows that's important work, but there's plenty of doctors.

Sighing, he heads up to the control centre and collapses in one of the ancient chairs that'll probably be left behind. He's not sure what's going to happen to everything, but he can't imagine it'll stay long. People might try and move further inland, in the desperate hopes that the Outback might stop the kaiju, but how long is that going to last?

Poking and prodding at a few of the now-defunct buttons, Chase reaches forward to grab one of the small toy-kaijus they'd always kept up here of Scissure, like they needed to remember why half of Sydney wasn't standing like it used to be.

So now it was stay here and wait or move on to Hong Kong.

Before he could take the time to process that decision, though, he heard the telltale scrape of a door that told Chase that someone else was lurking around -- to pillage or salvage or finish off work, he didn't know, but it made him feel somewhat relieved to know he wasn't the only one having trouble moving forward.

Obi-Wan had never thought about having children of his own. As a Jedi, it was rare that one had a relationship sanctioned by the Temple that then resulted in offspring and he had always been far too busy dealing with Anakin as a padawan to ever seriously consider having his own children. Besides, there had always been the matter of meeting someone to have said children with and between the strict guidelines of the code and his own full schedule, it simply wasn't feasible.

And now he had a child - sort of. Anakin had left behind two children and while the daughter was tucked away on Alderaan, they'd hidden the son on Tatooine with Anakin's stepbrother. But Owen and Beru had to make a trip to Anchorhead to buy parts for their farm and had asked (told, really) Obi-Wan to mind the infant. And so he was.

He had left a door open so that he could go back and forth between his hut on Tatooine and the Nexus but he didn't dare bring the boy through. If he did and then the door wouldn't let him back through, Owen and Beru would be beside themselves. While Obi-Wan was a reluctant guardian, they were not, and he felt they would worry just like any parents might when faced with a missing child.

For the past half hour or so, the child had been crying incessantly and Obi-Wan had done everything he could do to soothe it. No amount of walking or pleading or cajoling seemed to satisfy the baby and he didn't seem to be hungry or wet. At a loss of what to do, he started singing an old song he'd heard on some planet with Qui-Gon long ago when he was barely out of the creche. He never liked to sing with an audience but he guessed that Luke wasn't going to remember it anyway.

[[OOC: The door between Obi-Wan's hut and the Nexus is open so feel free to pop in.]]

Two months.

Obi-Wan had discovered the Nexus Hotel two months prior and in that time, he hadn't once run across anything remotely resembling an Imperial presence. There wasn't even a Hutt lord in charge of the place, which was surprising, because he imagined a place like this that served as a hub between worlds would be a prime staging point for a cartel. Still, it seemed there was no government at all to speak of and the citizens seemed neutral and benign. It was a safe enough place to hide when things got a bit hairy on Tatooine and it was a wonderful place to escape from the endless sands and the monotony of living in the Jundland Wastes.

Today, he had wandered through the myriad rooms and halls of the hotel before finding a room that had a collection of hot tubs and steam rooms within. The idea of water after spending so long parched on Tatooine was a luxury that Obi-Wan could not resist and it seemed the older he got, the more his muscles and bones protested the long hours of training he still put himself through. It took only a moment to make the decision to slide into one of the pools and he stripped quickly, leaving his robes in a messy pile next to the closest hot tub.

Once in, he couldn't help but sigh and stretch his arms out behind himself, pulling the sore muscles of his back into a delicious stretch that helped work out some of the stiffness and pain. It reminded him of the amenities in the Jedi temple back before the Empire had destroyed it, of the dozens of gymnasiums and hot pools that a weary Jedi or padawan could avail themselves of when the training grew too intense.

"The only thing better would be a massage," Obi-Wan said to himself, heedless of anyone else in the room who might overhear. While he was a wanted man throughout most of the galaxy, here in the Nexus he was perfectly anonymous and it was something he wanted to embrace for the time being. No responsibilities. No fear of being caught.

Simply relaxation.

Obi-Wan now suddenly understood why Anakin despised Tatooine so much. Aside from the slavery, which was rampant, the entire planet was covered in sand that seemed to get into any and everything no matter what measures one took to prevent it. Potable water was only obtained through complex vaporator systems which, inevitably, failed once the sand got into their inner workings and destroyed the delicate machinery. Obi-Wan was a decent hand at most technology but he would never be a savant the way Anakin was; as a result, his vaporators were constantly on the fritz and he was at the mercy of the mechanics in Anchorhead. They tended to gouge those who did not know better.

Obi-Wan kept to himself these days and missed the companionship once found within the halls of the Jedi temple. It pained him to think that the beautiful building no longer existed, the tenets it stood for torn asunder by the will of the newly-installed Galactic Emperor. Obi-Wan wish he'd seen it coming, had known that Palpatine meant ill by the people of Naboo and the Republic but nobody had seen it, nobody had connected the dots to lead from seemingly-unconnected Sith apprentices to their wily master. Palpatine had been very careful never to reveal any sort of Force-related powers. Even Masters Yoda and Windu had been unable to tell until it was far too late. And Anakin! Such great potential, his apprentice, but it had been twisted into fear and jealousy by Palpatine and used as a means to an end. The last thing Obi-Wan wanted was to cut him down on Mustafar and, yet, he had never been afraid to do what was necessary to protect the Order, even when the Order was essentially gone.

Which is why he chose to come to Tatooine to keep an eye out on a boy who might hold the key to the future of the entire Jedi Order in his chubby little fists. Luke Skywalker would grow up knowing the same sort of mundane existence his father had years ago and would know nothing beyond the windswept sands of Tatooine until the time came. They would keep him safe by hiding him in plain sight, in putting him on the one planet Anakin vowed never to return to. Luke would be safe here and Obi-Wan, to ensure that safety, would merely have to suffer the inconveniences of living on a backwater planet.

"At least the Empire doesn't seem remotely interested in colonizing this waste," he muttered to himself, drawing his cloak tighter as he peered out the windows. There was a sandstorm on the horizon and he needed to go cover as much as he could to keep it from being destroyed. This Force-foresaken planet was going to be the death of him, he knew it, and he hated it with every cell in his body. Still, duty trumped comfort.

"Why did it have to be sand?" he asked, wrenching the door open and stepping out into the wind. It seemed to calm as soon as he stepped into it, however, and as the sand settled there was a very different landscape before his eyes. Gone were the ancient droids and vaporators and in their place was plush carpet and fine wood, the interior of a palace or a temple and not the jagged rock of the Jundland Wastes. Obi-Wan peered back through the door to see his own meager home, the secondhand furniture and worn clothes, and decided that this new place bore further investigation.

If nothing else, it would be interesting and he hadn't had much in the way of excitement since arriving on Tatooine some months ago. It would be worth it simply to entertain himself for a few hours, wouldn't it?
