Gathering: New Year's Eve Gala

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.

Claire was by no means a prude or a killjoy or any of the multitude of personality traits that could ruin a party under the right circumstances, but she did have the annoying habit of thinking like a nurse at the most inopportune times. She had noticed the fellow, quite obviously on his way to drunk and she surely wished him well in his adventures, and had also noticed the sword at his side. Of course, he was in no way brandishing the thing like a fool and therefore she could reason that there was no danger imminent, but... But...

"Okay, so, real talk," she started when she'd drawn up beside the fellow. "I've stitched up a shitton of drunks in my time, and it's made me paranoid when I see one with a sharp and/or pointy object. You're leaving the sword alone for the evening, right?" She smiled at him hopefully. "No duels or anything like that?"

"Hopefully not," Porthos answered, but he was still frowning at the brown-skinned woman. He was certain that she was trying to tell him something, but he seemed to be missing the point. "This isn't a night for fighting." Of course, if a fight arose, he was hardly the sort to turn his back on it. Or let his state of inebriation get in the way. He had done some of his best fighting when drunk!
