Gathering: New Year's Eve Gala

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.

Porthos du Vallon - OTA

Porthos was never one to miss a party, and this was no exception. He was also one to pay a lot of attention to his appearance, and his doublet was his finest here, his hat perfectly poised on his head, and his sword perfectly clean at his waist.

By the end of the evening, he was fairly certain a donkey had stolen his hat, his doublet had been forgotten on the back of a chair - but at least his sword was still by his side. Even a very drunk Porthos had some standards, it seemed.

"Well, don't you cut a dashing figure," Jamie said, smiling as she came up beside the man who had quite obviously drowned the better part of his evening in the abundant alcohol at the party and still had ready access to a weapon. She quite liked his scar and his mussed and curly hair, and was feeling curiously convivial aside. "Are you enjoying your evening?"

"I am," Porthos confirmed, with a rakish grin at the beautiful woman. He hadn't met her before, he didn't think, but it never hurt to be warm and polite to a beautiful lady. Especially one who thought him dashing. (She was, of course, very right.) "Are you? If not, we should see to that."

She hardly knew what motivated her curiosities sometimes, but when someone piqued her interest she rarely stopped to question it. This fellow smiled easily and seemed warmed up by the idea of being charmed, and so she pressed forward.

"I am," She said, smirking a bit as she leaned in and gently nudged his arm with hers. "I suppose I could always stand an upgrade, though. As long as it doesn't end in my being ran through with that sword of yours, I mean. What did you have in mind?"

"Nothing involving that sword, then," Porthos assured her with another charming smile. "All fun should start with another drink, don't you think?" He offered her his arm, the one opposite where his sword hung, to take her towards the bar. While his mind was most definitely affected by his ample alcohol consumption, he still walked in a straight line, which ought to be noted.

Claire was by no means a prude or a killjoy or any of the multitude of personality traits that could ruin a party under the right circumstances, but she did have the annoying habit of thinking like a nurse at the most inopportune times. She had noticed the fellow, quite obviously on his way to drunk and she surely wished him well in his adventures, and had also noticed the sword at his side. Of course, he was in no way brandishing the thing like a fool and therefore she could reason that there was no danger imminent, but... But...

"Okay, so, real talk," she started when she'd drawn up beside the fellow. "I've stitched up a shitton of drunks in my time, and it's made me paranoid when I see one with a sharp and/or pointy object. You're leaving the sword alone for the evening, right?" She smiled at him hopefully. "No duels or anything like that?"

"Hopefully not," Porthos answered, but he was still frowning at the brown-skinned woman. He was certain that she was trying to tell him something, but he seemed to be missing the point. "This isn't a night for fighting." Of course, if a fight arose, he was hardly the sort to turn his back on it. Or let his state of inebriation get in the way. He had done some of his best fighting when drunk!
