And onwards

(People had warned him about this; that the doors could have this sort of mind of their own in that they could grab you, like a door could kidnap a person and change their history. Chase sort of hadn't bought that, until...)

The door behind him slammed shut and it had an air of finality to it. Everything here was too quiet ever since the wall had been torn down and the news that everyone who was still contributing to the mission was to move on to Hong Kong. Sydney Shatterdome was shutting down, with all its personnel. Chase didn't exactly know whether he wanted to move on, given the fact that they probably already had their fair share of doctors there and it wasn't like he was a pilot or anything. He patched them up when they came back and yeah, he knows that's important work, but there's plenty of doctors.

Sighing, he heads up to the control centre and collapses in one of the ancient chairs that'll probably be left behind. He's not sure what's going to happen to everything, but he can't imagine it'll stay long. People might try and move further inland, in the desperate hopes that the Outback might stop the kaiju, but how long is that going to last?

Poking and prodding at a few of the now-defunct buttons, Chase reaches forward to grab one of the small toy-kaijus they'd always kept up here of Scissure, like they needed to remember why half of Sydney wasn't standing like it used to be.

So now it was stay here and wait or move on to Hong Kong.

Before he could take the time to process that decision, though, he heard the telltale scrape of a door that told Chase that someone else was lurking around -- to pillage or salvage or finish off work, he didn't know, but it made him feel somewhat relieved to know he wasn't the only one having trouble moving forward.

"I don't even have a place, I stayed at the Shatterdome," Ben pointed out. That was common enough for Jaeger pilots but it still meant bunking in the least private and least luxurious accommodations possible.

"Candles are supposed to set the mood, anyway, so we'll pretend it's all intentional."

"It's not like the bunks were so bad, I have this thing where I like my privacy is all," Chase says, wandering through the house and giving Ben a wry smile. "Intentional and not my power bills not having been paid. That, or the lines are destroyed. Honestly, I'm not sure which is worse," he admits, dropping his keys down on the table.

"Probably the lines. I hit several in my last Jaeger fight," Ben said, remembering that jolt in vivid technicolor.

"It knocked us out of the Drift."

Chase has seen the physical and mental effects of what happens when the Drift is forcibly ended, but he's never actually experienced it. Never wanted to, either, given how bad it looks on the charts. "Well, if the world is ending, it's not like we need power." He digs through the cabinets to find the vodka, lifting the bottle. "Need more? Or are we skipping pleasantries?"

Ben lifted a hand and shook his head. "Any more of that and there won't be anything fun for you tonight. I need to have some of my wits about me." That and he might be a Ranger but he didn't have infinite tolerance.

"No pleasantries necessary," he said, flashing a cheeky grin.

Chase is so used to alcohol in the house and the family that he doesn't even think about a lack of performance. Usually, his mother had just crashed on and drank as much as she possibly could before passing out, so maybe it's not like she could've done anything either. Moved by Ben's words, Chase frames him and steps into his space to pin him to the counter, thinking 'what the hell' and that the world is ending anyway.

So that's why the kiss is a little hungrier than usual, pushing in and demanding that Ben part his lips within seconds of starting.

It was a good kiss. It had been a long time since Ben had been well and truly kissed like this and while it was mildly surprising it was Chase, he wasn't that shocked. He was a good looking man and Ben had been interested for a while.

He slid his arms around him and pulled him that much closer, wanting to feel every inch of his body pressed up against his own.

Chase pushed him a little harder against the counters, but mainly because he's after some leverage, the need to get him against the surface so he can try and climb Ben's body. Tequila has a bad habit of loosening him up, though he's not entirely sure this is a bad habit he's displaying right now. "Bed?" he suggests breathlessly.

"Bed," Ben confirmed. There was no place he wanted to be more than in a bed and a Category IV kaiju could decide it was going to take out all of Sydney and his answer would be exactly the same. Might as well go down doing something he enjoyed since the world was going to end anyway.

"Now?"

Maybe some other time, Chase would've cared more about fucking a coworker, but he really is through with the idea of propriety and besides, it's not like it'd be the first time he did -- his and Cameron's breakup had been pretty bad and part of the reason he'd come back to Sydney in the first place. "Left, then a right down the hall," he guides, shoving Ben's shirt off him.

Ben didn't need a gold-edged invitation. He made his way down the hall to the bedroom and fumbled with his belt and pants; maybe he should let Chase do this but he was a little too eager to wait.

"Been ages. Can't wait."

"Maybe wait a second," Chase protests as he hurries to get in a similar state, trying to recall the last time he'd been here and done this. Where'd be put everything, is the question? He gives Ben a push towards the bed, enough time to begin searching the nightstand for what he's after.

He grins when he comes up with the lube and condoms, tossing them onto the covers. "Better," he says.

"Much," Ben agreed. "Nice to know you're prepared. I would have been very, very upset if we had to stop and make a run to the store." Especially considering the current state of Sydney - sometimes supplies were hard to come by.

"This isn't something you exactly want to improvise, if you can help it."

"Yeah, I did that once in uni," Chase says, trying to banish that particularly horrible memory. "I remember I didn't sleep with another guy for what felt like a decade after that." One bad experience can make all apples seem rotten, though Jersey had been good until the call had come in.

"You have a preference?" Chase asks, settling one knee on the bed.

"Only to please who I'm with," Ben said, reaching forward and kissing Chase again, this time with a little more urgency.

"I switch. Doesn't matter."

"Yeah, neither do I," Chase admits, though usually the men he pulls tend to like to dominate him and pull at his hair, make comments about how very pretty it is. Chase definitely doesn't like to call those guys back. "Rock paper scissors?" he jokes with a smirk.

"Night's young," Ben said, sliding his hand down Chase's back with more tenderness than he normally expressed in a one night stand. "Time for both. I'll top? Someone's got to make a decision around here."

The touch to his back sends shivers down his spine, his hairs standing on end as he closes his eyes and drifts forward. Something in his brain is yelling and shouting at him, like he doesn't actually know this man, but that's impossible. They've worked together for ages. "Yeah," he breathes out, focusing on the moment. "Yeah, let's start there."

Ben had somewhat more experience with women than men but some of the same principles held true - chief among them, preparation. He had never been the sort to go into these things in a rush and doubly not with Chase, whom he considered a friend. So when he slid his fingers down the other man's back it was with single-minded focus.

He pressed his lips to Chase's shoulder and snaked his hand around his hip and pressed it low against his belly. "I think you ought to be first. Seems only fair, right?"

"Fair?" Chase echoes, not denying it, but amused nonetheless. "I don't know how this system works, but if it gets me this, I don't mind being first," he says, heart starting to pound faster for the touch of Ben's lips to his shoulder, forcibly leaning back and craving more of that touch.

He breathes out a touch shakily as he moves forward and away from that warmth to pluck up the lube, hips rocking forward now that his body knows he's so, so close.

"I'm excessively concerned with fairness," he teased, nipping lightly where his neck and shoulder meet before reaching for the lube. The anticipation was almost better than the act, sometimes, but Ben had confidence that this was going to be good from start to finish.

"If you ever need a reference letter, let me know," Chase says warmly, easily giving up the lube without any real worry. "I'll make sure to put your excessive fairness as a skill set." He leans over, wrapping his arm around Ben's neck so he can drag him in for a slow, heated kiss in the meantime.

The kiss distracted him for a good several minutes. Ben had always enjoyed kissing, even just for its own sake, and Chase was a hell of a kisser.

After breaking the kiss, Ben eased him down against the bed and slid behind him before slicking his fingers with the lube. He pressed his hand low against Chase's back.

"Still good?"

It's been a while, so it's not like this will be comfortable and easy, but he doubts it'll be painful either. That's pretty much all he can hope for. Chase bites on his inner cheek to help him through some of the more awkward moments and nods, glancing over his bare shoulder.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he promises warmly, a bit touched with how much Ben actually cares without just ploughing forward.

Ben kept it slow as he slid into him. There was no enjoyment in sex for him if both parties didn't enjoy it and the idea of hurting someone just to get his was absolutely abhorrent.

"Just let me know. I'm all about your pleasure, after all."
