Gathering: Summer Party
Outside of the Nexus Hotel, waiters and hotel staff had begun to set up the umbrellas and the tables in the middle of the day. Soon, it became clear that something was happening in the shadow of the Nexus. White tablecloths were draped on the tables and drinks and food were brought out with the help of several waiters and servers, staffing tables with hot and cold foods beside bartending stations. Summery drinks in bright, neon colors are laid out one by one and soon, the afternoon light casts a radiant look on the scene.
Music plays faintly in the background and a note at the front desk invites all the Nexus guests to head outside and join in on the summer party, which promises to continue going as long as there are people to stay and continue keeping the warm atmosphere rolling.
On the lawn, social games had been set out -- lawn bowling, croquet, and tables were set up with chairs for anyone who didn't quite have the will or the spirit to get into such games. Soon, a small number of people had begun to mill around, but as with all parties, there's always room for more.

"Look, I'm ruining the party," Adrian said, trying to get a rein on his emotions so he wasn't making a mess of everything. "So I'm going to head back to my room. You can enjoy or come with or whatever but I'm warning you, I'm a black hole right now."

Sydney took his hand and tugged. "I thought we were going to Rome and I was going to go on and on about aqueducts until your ears hurt?"
She hadn't meant to push him down that hole, but she couldn't be less than he was and wasn't going to let him rationalize his choices. She never had before, she wasn't going to start now.

"Do you really want to be seen in public with this?" Adrian asked darkly. "Because I wouldn't. I would run screaming from this."
It was difficult to pull himself out of the hole once he was there and he was starting to sober up enough that Spirit amplified his already-bad mood.

"You're crazier than I am," Adrian said. He didn't know how to fight back against Spirit without just numbing it and having Sydney around just reminded him how much he failed her again.
"I keep disappointing you."

Sydney slipped her hand into his. "Come on. Let's go back home and reboot a little. Rome will still be there tomorrow."

"Yeah, that's the good thing about this place. Open doors to crazy whenever you want," Adrian said. He held onto Sydney's hand like a lifeline and in many ways it was. She grounded him even when he got to his highest highs and lowest lows.
