Gathering: New Year's Eve Gala

The annual Nexus New Year's Eve gala began at 8 in the evening. Too grand to be contained by the lobby or dining hall, the gardens at the front of the hotel were employed, with long strings of white lights forming a twinkling canopy from the front doors all the way to the hedge maze. The weather was temperate and calm, and the night perfectly clear.

Drinks were served at various bars set up throughout the gardens and lobby, with champagne cocktails being the specialty of the night. Wheeling through the crowd was a bartender with golden cart providing warm drinks on the go: Tom and Jerrys, rum punch, negus, and Irish coffee.

Crisply-dressed wait staff wove through the collected guests with an abundance of hors d'oeuvres for all different tastes. The Bistro remained open with a limited selection of items for those who were wanting something more substantial.

Above the front doors was hung a large, gold-rimmed clock counting down the last hours, minutes, and seconds of the current year.

Jamie bows gallantly and when he tips his face back up, he's grinning. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, then, and only hope I'm worthy of it. Muse, surgeon...is there something you're not capable of?"

It's been a while since he's got on so well with someone and Jamie thinks it's about time he starts making friends in this place, seeing as how he's a wee bit stuck.

"No, I'm not," he says. Then he gives her a curious expression. "I don't believe I promised anything. I might have mentioned that it was a possibility."

And she's right, he wouldn't smoke weed in the midst of a crowd. That's a little too blasé even for him.

"But, if you'd like to walk with me to the garden..." he leads, starting in that direction with a brief stop at the bar for a refill on his drink.

"She'd be damn pleased to hear you call her that," Olaf says, grinning as he thinks of Michele. "Seriously, though, next time you pop into my version of Auckland, give me a shout and I'll bring you by to meet the goddesses. The family won't be happy, but..." he shrugs, as casual as he ever is. "They're never happy."

And it's not like bad things can transcend space and time to reach here, can they? He's sort of hoping and banking on that not being a thing.

Chase hates to imagine Ben sitting alone out there in a desert, his charge far away and hiding away from some evil dictator family-member. He slides his fingers over Ben's neck and strokes lightly, a frown on his lips. "I don't like thinking of you so lonely out there," he mumbles, trying not to be overheard. "I mean, I know I can't move here full time either, but I'd spend more time here."

"I would absolutely love to walk with you to the gardens, Mr. Specter," Rachel says lightly. This is a weird place, sure, but she already feels more relaxed and unwound than she has in ages. The weight of everything is lifted, even momentarily, and it feels good.

"Let's go."

"It's all right," Obi-Wan assured him. "I am well aware of my duty and the sacrifice it requires. Besides, I'm not out there alone all the time. Sometimes I'm here with you, aren't I?"

This, he paired with a grin to make himself feel better about the whole situation.

"Stop with the 'Mr. Specter' bit. I'm not your teacher," he says as he weaves through people and around hedges until he finds a spot a little bit away from the crowd and the direct view of the building. He doesn't want everyone trying to Bogart his stash.

He lights the joint and takes a generous hit. As he hands it over to her, he asks, "You have done this before, right?"

"Yeah, I know," Chase agrees, feeling like it's just not enough and he's not sure how to say that without sounding a bit greedy. "What if I want more? More for you? More for us?" Because he hates the idea that Ben is out there on his own. "What if I just...came and stayed for weekends or something?"

"That's not about getting caught," Chiana answered, her smile slyer for it. "That's about putting on a show."

"You didn't? Now I'm hurt," Chiana replied, but she grinned again before taking another sip. It was excellent.

​​ "It's unintentional exhibitionism if you get caught." He grins at her. "But, either way, the question still stands."

"Saved the world, once," Martha says, and it's only because she's drunk that she mentions it, only glibly because that's the only way she can talk about it. "But I'm a rubbish cook, for starters, so I honestly can't do everything," she feels compelled to add.

Cocking an eyebrow, Martha signals the bartender for another round--they give her a wink, which would be unnerving in London, but here is a bit sweet. "Why aren't they? I mean, not like my family ever is."

They're better at not hating each other, now, thanks to...well...massive trauma. Sometimes Martha isn't sure about the tradeoff, though.

"I don't really know him very well, but he seems very nice. He designed for a friend of mine, back home. I don't see why he wouldn't want to talk to you about it," Annie replied with a small smile. It was true: She knew Cinna mostly by reputation. But he'd been an important friend to Katniss, and that alone said all she needed to know.

"Do you ever design for anyone else?"

Annie has never been much for fancy dresses -- They remind her far to acutely of incidents best left forgotten -- but with such a canny eye and attention to detail, she could see how lots of people would be interested in buying this girl's work. Effie alone could keep her busy for months.

"I reckon if ye ken save the world a time or two, being able to cook doesna matter quite so much," Jamie says. It's never something he's ever considered, a woman who can't cook, but he supposes in the grand scheme it isna so strange as to be unheard of. If a lady is more focused on other things, cooking's not something that would keep her from being successful.

"Dinna fash yourself about that," he says. "Not that you were."

"Smoked, never marijuana," Rachel admits. "Is there anything I ought to know?" Rachel knows that Mike spent a lot of his early twenties smoking weed regularly but she's always been too Type A for that.

"It's not going to make me go crazy or anything, is it?"

He gives her a look. "Don't smoke it like a cigarette." Before she does anything dangerous, he gives her a demonstration of how to properly take a hit, then hands the joint over.

As he blows smoke into the air, he shakes his head. "It might make you want to eat a house though."

Chiana grinned. "I'll be whatever you want me to be, Harvey." Exhibitionism? Not a problem.

"Try having four brothers of roughly the same age, all with god spirits, in the same general area," Olaf says. "All the ego and the madness and the power? None of it bodes well," he says. "I try to stay out of it, seeing as they can handle themselves, but that's usually when people start dying or getting killed."

Congratulations Chiana, you just made Harvey Specter choke on his scotch. That's a new one. Keep in mind, this is in no way a bad thing. This sort of surprise, he can get behind.

"That was remarkably more forward than I usually hear," he says, covering very well the fact that he might have scotch in his lungs.

Chiana chuckled at his reaction, hips shifting in her usual manner as she sipped her warm drink, black eyes twinkling happily. What? She liked to elicit reactions from people. "You usually hang out with boring people," she concluded, lips still stretched in a teasing smile.

"That and having a good curry house around the corner," Martha replies with a smirk, though she realises after she says it that Jamie will have zero frame of reference for this. "You say not to worry, but my auntie still can't believe I can't make a decent pepper soup. Never mind that I could sew someone's leg back on, given the right equipment."

She winks at him--she can't help it.

Martha's expression mirrors her feelings, which is to say 'vaguely horrified'. She nods, slowly. "I can see where that could be a problem," she admits, and swizzles the stir stick in her drink. "How...exactly do people in your town keep from noticing?"

London was big enough and still people ended up finding out.

"We're not that powerful," Olaf points out. Because for all of their antics and abilities, it's pretty easy to put it down to a variety of causes -- drugs being the main one. "I mean, and what some of them do is really just child's play. True, I can't stick around the same place too often, but that's no bummer for me."

"Okay," Martha said, completely confused as to what exactly divine powers did for one, now. "Why can't you stick around?" Admittedly, she was certain this could be due to drug charges, or at least to some extent.
