All Hallows Haunt and All Must Have Fun

The fog had begun near the dusk hours, coating all the plants and flowers in the garden. It settled, heavy, and blanketed everything with a new cover that was only matched in mood by the graveyard that had unearthed itself from the grass and the moss. Names were etched on each gravestone, but the most unnerving part was that every few steps, if you stopped and listened very, very carefully, you might hear a knock of a human hand against hard wood. It was almost as if the dead were being called upwards.

The maze stood normal, but inside around the corners, there were things lurking and waiting.

Outside might have become frightening and gloomy, but the contrast to indoors was stark. Inside, carved pumpkins lit with candles turned the ballroom and restaurants into amber-lit abodes, costumed partygoers twirled to the music played by the band in the lobby (while the DJ had set up in the conservatory). Candy and small hors d'oeuvres circulated on the trays of immaculately clad waiters and though outside it was stormy, foggy, and spooky, inside was a delight of themed drinks, delicious food, and the manic and half-crazed mood of people in the midst of their fun.

The party for Halloween had begun.

And there was no telling when it might ever end.

"Whatever. I shove my way into that column and make room. Sometimes a girl's gotta fight for what she wants." She's enjoying the full of shit that Harvey is too. Dawn leans in as if to conspire with him. "I might not look like it, but I can be pretty scrappy when I need to be. Plus I'm really good with a crossbow."

She's just gonna look at him, highly amused that he ever watched Scooby Doo. "Let me guess, you watched Transformers too. Oh! And that X-Men cartoon."

He grins at her, without saying a word. Her answer is exactly what it should be. If you're not where you want to be, do what you have to do to get there. Even if that means pushing other people out of your way.

He arches an eyebrow at 'scrappy'. "So you're the annoying sidekick that's really too young to play with the big kids?" Teasing, who Harvey? No way.

As for her queries about the television he watched as a child, he doesn't dignify that with a response. Surely she's figured out by now that he's well-versed in popular culture.

"Well, annoying is right but I'm more like the sidekick to the sidekicks. You know, cause I have a life outside of being a super hero." She was trying to get a college degree, after all. Or she had been back home. Unfortunately as the supernatural continued to interrupt her education, she was precariously close to losing all scholarships. Her grades were the only thing keeping her in. Dawn was far more intelligent than she usually let on.

"But when I wanna be, I am so one of the big kids. Sometimes I even drive the getaway car." She adds with a hint of amusement. Because while it's true, and while driving the getaway car isn't usually a part of what the big kids do, Dawn does it and also gets in the middle of the fray.

"When did you become a superhero?" he asks. He doesn't remember that coming up in conversation. She'd mention that her sister saves the world, but not that any of them were actually 'superheroes'.

He gives her an almost amused look. "You drive the car? What about your sister? Or her friends?"

"Hey. I have totally helped save the world here and there not to mention some innocent bystanders. It can't always be all Buffy Buffy Buffy." Yes that was her Marsha Marsha Marsha moment. But really, she's done her fair share. Granted, sometimes she was causing the problems. But she was getting better about not doing that.

"I'm a way better driver than Buffy. But we have this van so we can all get to a scene together and with weapons. I drive it. And I use the crossbow to help get people to safety. You know, by keeping it aimed at the zompires and various other oogly booglies." She explains. "Plus if someone is super injured we can put them in the van and take them to the hospital."

If he grins at her, can you blame him? Here is this teenager - she's like, what, nineteen? it still counts - telling him that she saves the world with her sister. Her sister who is supposedly some mystical important something or other. (To be honest, he either wasn't paying attention or it's too bizarre for him to believe.)

Now he really is fighting a blistering smile. "You call yourselves 'Scoobies' and ride around in a van?" he asks incredulously. "Is it blue and green?" He is trying really really hard not to laugh right now.

"It's more of a gray-ish color." She answers thoughtfully before she realizes that he's making fun of her. Her brow furrows and she crumples up the now empty napkin in her hand. She tosses the balled up napkin at him. Of course her other hand still has the dagger in it. "You know you should't make fun of a girl with a sharp object in her hand... no matter how hot you are."

He smirks at her, ignoring the napkin. "I have a bat. I'm good," he counters. The smirk only gets bigger at the tail end of her statement. "I am hot, aren't I?" he agrees/asks with no sense of uncertainty at all.

This dramatic eye-roll right here is what he gets for his cockiness. It's coupled with a wry smile though. "Someday I'm gonna learn to quit word vomiting all over you." Pro-tip: no she wouldn't.

That smirk of his turns to a full on grin. "No you won't." A beat. "But that's okay. I can handle it." If she actually vomits on him, they might have a problem.

"Weren't you going to go outside?" he asks.

"Yeah I was but you're being all distract-y." Distracting in more ways than one. Dawn harrumphs and puts on every ounce of bravado she has as she moves right past him for the double glass doors that lead to outside. "See ya later, Babe Ruth."

Okay, he might be slightly impressed that she actually pulled out the name of a real ballplayer. Not because she's a 'girl', but because she doesn't really seem the 'sport' type. She may have even said as much.

"You're going out there all alone? Isn't that dangerous?"

It was less about her being the sporty type and more about her being the history buff that she is. That would probably make it less cool in Harvey's eyes though, so she wouldn't volunteer the information unless otherwise pressed to do so. Any sports she likes is more for the eye candy rather than the actual sports. Case in point: Harvey Specter in a baseball uniform. Yum.

She looks back at him, wide-eyed with one brow arched high. "Maybe. I'm assuming my sister is out there though. If there's danger she's usually in the middle of it kicking it in the behind. You know, hero stuff."

He ponders this all for a moment, peering at her. "So, what you're saying is, you're going to go outside - alone, potentially risking your life on the assumption that your ass-kicking sister is out there to save you if something tries to eat you?"

Well, Harvey had pretty much just described Dawn's entire existence. As her sister had once said: 'Dawn's in trouble, must be Tuesday'. And never had more accurate words been spoken. Maybe it was the keyness of her, prone to danger and turmoil. Maybe she was just trying to measure up and pull her weight in a world where everyone else was better than her at everything.

But now that Harvey had spelled it out like that, she actually reconsidered going outside. "Well, I mean she could be out there by herself. She might need backup."

He almost laughs at her. He hadn't been aiming to discourage her from going outside, but to discourage her from going outside alone.

For the moment, he gives her a look and lets her try to work that out on her own. "That's not what I was saying," he prompts and taps the bat against the floor.

Dawn arches a brow at him, the bat drawing her attention to make her look down to the floor and back up to his eyes. "Then what were you saying?"

He'd roll his eyes, but he's afraid he'd see the back of his head. "How about not going outside alone?" he hints.

"But I'm bored in here." She only realizes after the fact that that might have sounded like a slight to his company. Whoops. So her eyes go wide and she shakes her head. "Not that you're boring! I just mean... you know... I want more candy." No, that was not what she meant. She probably did not need more candy. She just meant this party sucked. Her Halloweens were usually much more eventful than this.

"Yeah, candy. You know what I want? Pop Rocks." And she's going to go in search of some, turning on her heel to look through all the baskets of candy scattered about. She doesn't even know if they have Pop Rocks. But she wants some. And it's a nice diversion from embarrassing herself in front of Harvey.

He presses his lips together. "It's good to know that I'm boring you," he says. Teasing? Maybe. If she spooks, he'll just grin that shit-eating grin of his and wait.

"Are you going to drop them in some soda too?" he asks her. What? If she hasn't figured out he's an asshole by now, she's not been paying attention.

"Oh my god you are so not boring me. Do you even hear what people besides you say?" She calls back over her shoulder. She pauses at the baskets of candy and starts rifling through them.

Without looking up she replies to him. "Sure I am. You can't have pop rocks without soda." She shrugs. "What can I say? I like to live on the edge."

He shakes his head and grins wickedly. "No. I never listen to anyone else." It's not entirely a lie either.

"Grab some Mentos and a 2-liter and we'll go out back and see how high we can get it to shoot."

"You know what? I actually believe that." She answers him without looking in his direction, her eyes wide and her head nodding slowly as she picks out several packets of differing flavored pop rocks from the baskets.

"Or, I could toss the Mentos in the air and you could pretend you're actually Babe Ruth and hit a home run." She tosses back at him

Her response makes him grin. Because he's an ass. She really does remind him a little bit of Mike.

"What makes you think I'm not Babe Ruth?"

"Well Babe Ruth used to binge on hot dogs and soda pop and..." Dawn looks over to Harvey, down and then back up. There's a momentary look of appreciation before she turns back to dig through the candy bins. "I'm pretty sure you've got a six pack going on under there or something close to it. Maybe a four pack."
