Gathering: New Guest Reception

[concierge]

The black sign positioned in front of the Dining Hall's main entrance reads:

New Guest Reception
TODAY
6 PM - 8 PM

All guests welcome

In the Dining Hall itself, the chairs have been pushed up against the walls and the long dining table turned into a buffet stocked with finger foods. At the far end of the room is a small bar serving beer, standard cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks.

"About a month, give or take," April replied. "Time's weird when you're going back and forth, or at least it is for me. I'm thinking about asking my friend to help me create a program to help me keep track."

Balancing her plate on one hand, she plucked a cookie from it with the other and wagged it Raleigh's way. "You're lucky you figured out how to go back and forth quickly. From what I hear, some people never do."

"I've always been good in a crisis?" Raleigh says, sheepish about that. He's always had an innate knack for things like this, things that kind of depend more on a feeling than anything based in fact.

"So, where's home for you?"

"New York," April answered after she'd swallowed a bite of cookie, and then quickly added, "That's on Earth. Just in case you aren't from there."

Most of the people she'd met had been, but then there were people like Garrus, who apparently wasn't even really human on top of not being from Earth.

"How about you?"

"I've been to New York," Raleigh says, laughing warmly. "But it's been a long time. Most of what I do requires me to be stationed somewhere in the Pacific."

He's sure that eventually the kaiju will find a way to break through the Panama canal and once they do, it's going to be all over for the Atlantic rim.

"What do you do?" April asked, her eyes bright with curiosity. Raleigh looked like he could be military, he had that kind of build, but she didn't want to assume. People made a lot of assumptions about her because of how she looked, and most of them turned out to be dead wrong.

"It's...I was a ranger with the jaeger program. I fought kaiju." Raleigh knows from talking to other people since arriving that this isn't really something shared in common with everyone in the hotel.

"Giant Godzilla looking things? Ugly bastards."
