Today is her birthday. Birthdays aren't usually anything special in 12 and, if it's turning 12, it's usually something to dread. The only birthday Katniss has ever cared about was 19 and she's not there yet. Instead, she's turning 18 today and if nothing had ever changed, she would be lining up for the Reaping for her last time this year. She'd have so many names in the ball that she'd be bound to be picked but Katniss likes to think she'd be lucky. After all, she made it to sixteen without ever getting Reaped, didn't she?
It had been Prim who was Reaped that year, Prim who only had one name in the ball and had the best shot out of any kid in the Seam to never get Reaped. Prim, for whom Katniss had sacrificed everything.
On her birthday, Katniss always thinks of Prim. She thinks about how Prim always made it a point to give her something on her birthday even if she didn't have the resources that Katniss had. Somehow magically, there was good flint for starting fires or a little tinder box. Her boots got patched or there was good, pliable wood for new arrows. Prim always managed to make something out of nothing.
Today, so she doesn't think about Prim, Katniss decides to work. She's taking orders in the dining room, bussing tables, working back in the kitchen. Anything to keep her hands and mind busy so that homesickness doesn't threaten to eat her from the inside out. It's always been the mental things she's struggled with. She can deal with pain, hunger, death but she never, ever has been able to deal with thinking about just how much she misses her sister each and every day.

"Do you get bored here? With so much freedom and so little reason to fight."
no subject
"Not really," Katniss says. "I would much rather have peace and freedom than get a chance to bash someone's brains in. As much as I like to fight, I like peace even more than that."
no subject
And he likes that, that he knows a different Katniss than the rest of the world does.

Katniss snorts. "Don't tell anyone. They'll think I'm a pushover, Peeta, and we can't let that happen." It's mostly teasing but she has a real point about not wanting her soft side exposed. If this is a trick by the Capitol, it's a weakness that could be easily exploited.

He reaches out to run his thumb across the water slick skin of her shoulder, biting his bottom lip slightly as he does. The idea of being allowed to initiate a touch like this with her is still new enough that he's a little hesitant and still very much in awe with it.
no subject
"Good. I'll keep your secrets too," she promises. Indulging Peeta is something new for her and she likes the way it feels with him with it's just them alone.
"This is a pretty good secret, I think."
no subject
"It's the best secret I've ever had." Which would have formerly gone to the 'I'm in love with the girl on fire', but since this involved actually getting to be with the girl on fire, it trumps that one.

"Peeta, could you just..." Katniss reaches for him and kisses him in one fluid movement. She has always been brash and bold except when it comes to relationships and she thinks it's time that she tried to seize some happiness in this area of her life too.
no subject
"Just for clarification's sake," he tells her with a big grin. "You can do that any time you want."
no subject
"Glad to know I've got permission," Katniss says, grinning at him. She has never really asked for permission for much of anything. She's been in charge of her own destiny for so long that it's a little foreign and funny to seek permission for kissing Peeta.
"Can we kiss again?"
no subject
"Absolutely. Anytime. Anywhere," he tells her, taking the initiative this time as he reaches out to put a hand at the back of her neck and pull her closer. The kiss starts out gentle, but grows deeper quickly.
no subject
Katniss kisses him deeper than she ever has before, less shy about this, and slides her arms around his waist as she presses herself closer.
no subject
There's a part of him that knows this is the furtherest they've ever gone, that this kiss is different from all of the other kisses, but right now all he can think about is this kiss, the way she feels in his arms, the way she feels pressed against him. He trails his fingers down her arm, beneath the water, keeping it chaste because he doesn't want to push Katniss too far. Despite that, he's almost breathless with the want that this kiss is building in him.
no subject
Katniss thinks she should probably stop and pull away. Something about pushing things sexually always makes her nervous even if she's fearless in every other part of her life but part of her knows this is Peeta and it just feels right. She pulls away after a moment and looks at Peeta, not sure if she should trust her words.
"I feel...nervous. In a good way?"
no subject
"I know. Me too." He's nervous for so many reasons. He's nervous about her seeing his leg, he's nervous about pushing her too far, he's nervous about how their relationship is changing. He's nervous about doing this right in both a physical sense and an emotional sense.
"We can stop anytime you'd like." He nods his head toward the bank of the pond where he's set things up. "We can go back up there, wrap up in a blanket and I'll just hold you, if that's what you want." A smirk tugs at his lips. "This is not your surprise either," he teases her.
no subject
"I'm beginning to think there isn't a surprise," Katniss deadpans. It takes some of the anxious energy out of the air, though, and for that she's grateful. Being physical with Peeta feels good but it does make her feel inexplicably like a rabbit caught in a trap.
"You just told me there was to get me out here, right?"
no subject
"You've caught me," he tells her, looking up at her, grin still in place. "What are you going to do with me now?"
no subject
"Probably kiss you some more," she admits easily enough. "But if there is a surprise, I'm going to have to see it."
no subject
no subject
Katniss grins right back. "You don't have to turn around if you don't want to. It's just you. I don't care if you see."
She cares, of course, but not because she doesn't want him to see her. More to the point, she does want him to see her.
no subject
"Okay," he answers, more for confirmation's sake than anything. "Me either. I mean, you don't have to turn your back when I come out of the water either. If you don't want to."
no subject
"We can both look," she says, equal parts nervous and excited about that. Her heart is beating quickly, like some tiny bird, and she thinks if she were a bird, a hunter's arrow would have found her by now.
"Weirdly, I'm nervous."
no subject
But, his heart is beating just as quickly and he swallows thickly. "I understand though. I am too."
Nervous, he means.
no subject
"Nice to know that the standards are so low," Katniss teases. Her voice is warm and her smile is wide, wider than she thinks she's ever smiled before. Peeta tends to bring that out in her.
"I think you're beautiful too. Inside and out."
no subject
He's actually going to color pink at the compliment. "Thank you," because he's not sure what else to say to that.
