Peeta has gotten his hands on some painting supplies. It was a beautiful day and Peeta hadn't spent many of those outside because he'd been busy baking and exploring the hotel. However, today he was wearing a tee shirt and a pair of ratty jeans; the shirt as well as his arms and hands were smudged with paint. The scene slowly emerging on the canvas was one of a meadow with mountains, the sun just setting beyond them. His brow was furrowed as he focused on getting just the right shade and light in the sunset.

Peeta was adjusting here. He was beginning to live a life. He enjoyed his job baking for the hotel. He was beginning to branch out and open some of the doors, no longer terrified that every one would bring an army of peacekeepers from the Capitol down on them. He was still wary about the Capitol finding them, and he probably always will be, but it no longer paralyzed him in his daily life here.

After several moments, he took a step back, lips pressed together as he contemplated the scene. He was missing something, but he wasn't quite sure what yet. After several moments of studying the canvas, he put his brushes aside and toe-heeled his shoes off to wiggle his toes in the grass. Maybe taking a break would help.

Peeta chuckles quietly, ducking his head. "I've never found it difficult." And that's true, even when Katniss was being contrary, Peeta didn't mind being near her. In fact, he generally wanted to be closer to her, at least as long as she wasn't freezing him out. He had gotten bitter back home , knowing that everything in the arena had been a game for her. He'd gotten over it though the moment he'd known they were going back in the arena.

It's odd, because it took such a dramatic event to get them to this place. Peeta likes to think that if he'd actually managed to to speak to her back in 12, they would have eventually fallen into this easy friendship (and maybe something more). However, they'll never know because the Games did intervene and for that, he's grateful.

"You are totally lying," Katniss points out. There's no way that anyone could find her something less than difficult but she recognizes that Peeta has feelings that possibly cloud his judgment on it.

"Maybe we won't have to run away. I really do like it here even if it's not home. There's plenty of ways to slip out and go hunting."

Peeta laughs at that and shakes his head. "I'm not. Yes, you're not the easiest person for most people to be around, but I don't like easy."

He nods in agreement. "I like it. Sometimes I feel guilty about that, but I like it."

"I feel guilty too. I guess it's stupid to feel guilty about being safe but I just want everyone else to be here too. People keep showing up," Katniss points out. "Maybe Prim will come soon."

She doesn't mention Peeta's family because he hardly ever talks about them anymore but she hopes they show up too.

"There's always a chance," Peeta nods a little. It's not that he doesn't want his family here and safe, but Peeta isn't as close to his family as Katniss is. His mother is abusive and his father loves him, but he doesn't stand up to his mother for any of his sons. For whatever reason, rather than bond together because of their mother, he and his brothers have become distanced from each other, each surviving on their own rather than together.

"Do you think Prim would like it here?"

"A place she can have her goat and look after people? Prim would love it," Katniss confirms. "Prim isn't really all that hard to please. Neither am I, except when it comes down to the people I want to spend time with. I have pretty simple needs. I could never imagine being from the Capitol and needing so much just to get through my every day life. It's just overwhelming when you think about it."

Peeta shakes his head. "I guess I need a little more than that, a place to bake and something to paint with but..." He bites his lip against adding and you. She's been on the beach with him in the arena. She knows that he needs her and bringing it up again will only make her uncomfortable. After a moment, he shrugs. "No, I don't understand needing so much every day either."

"We could be happy, anyway," Katniss says. Somehow, all of her future plans include Peeta now even though before she was content to be alone. It just seems like she is never going to be rid of the boy with the bread - nor does she want to be.

Peeta nods because he has no doubt that he could be happy with Katniss even they are in the middle of nowhere. He's never had any doubt that he could be happy with Katniss. This is the first time that he's known that she's included him in her future plans and he likes that. A lot.

"We'll find our way here, whether it means we settle down in the hotel, or if we have to run."
