The young woman sitting near the wall was beautiful, dangerously so--Martha's mind went to Lord of the Rings and Galadriel being beautiful and terrible at once. Even so, she had seen plenty of beautiful people before, and found that usually they didn't like to dwell on it. Those that did were, frankly, unpleasant or boring.
