October had finally come. Maybe it was stupidly cliche but Adam had always liked this time of year and liked the spike in power he had when so close to Samhain. There wasn't anything else like it, no other points of the year when his power surged quite so much and he thought if there was a way back to his own version of New Salem, it would be during Samhain. He had missed his window of opportunity last year but this year, he sought to be prepared well and early on.

To that end, he'd camped out in the library with every magic book he could find, pouring through spells to see what he could find to open up a portal between worlds. It was slow business, considering it was never a good idea to mess with the unknown quite that much but Adam had to find a way to harness his power without the use of the Master tools which were, as far as he knew, locked away back in New Salem away from his reach.

The Nexus itself seemed to be a collection of ley lines, a convergence of magical power and if there was a way for him to tap into that and ride with the natural flow of magic here instead of fight against it, Adam thought there was a way for him to send that power channeling back through the door home and toward his enemy. He had to assume that Black John was still at large, even a year later, but he hoped that the stories he'd heard from other people about time suspending while in the Nexus held true; otherwise, he was sure that everyone and everything he held dear had already been destroyed by this point.

No, he had to keep faith that being in the Nexus hadn't affected the climate of things back home. Otherwise, the cloying guilt that Adam often felt about how much he loved it here and how much he did not want to go back and face his fears would rise up and swallow him completely. For the most part, Adam did love the Nexus. He loved Bella and he loved the other friends he had here and the safety far outweighed his desire to save New Salem. This attempt to launch an attack through the Nexus on Black John was a last-ditch attempt, a Hail Mary, and he did so with the knowledge that if it failed, it would have been all he could do. He would have tried, at least, and failed instead of not trying at all.

"Ugh, I've never been good at the theoretical," he muttered, gathering up his books and heading down to the pool where there was a large enough quantity of water for him to work with. Flipping to one of the spells, Adam lifted his hands and murmured the incantation while gathering up a perfectly-smooth sphere of water, testing the bounds of his control as it grew bigger and bigger.

If he could do it with a pool, maybe he could do it with the ocean itself.

[[Catch Adam either near the pool or in the library or in the corridors between the two. He looks a little frazzled.]]

Outside of the Nexus Hotel, waiters and hotel staff had begun to set up the umbrellas and the tables in the middle of the day. Soon, it became clear that something was happening in the shadow of the Nexus. White tablecloths were draped on the tables and drinks and food were brought out with the help of several waiters and servers, staffing tables with hot and cold foods beside bartending stations. Summery drinks in bright, neon colors are laid out one by one and soon, the afternoon light casts a radiant look on the scene.

Music plays faintly in the background and a note at the front desk invites all the Nexus guests to head outside and join in on the summer party, which promises to continue going as long as there are people to stay and continue keeping the warm atmosphere rolling.

On the lawn, social games had been set out -- lawn bowling, croquet, and tables were set up with chairs for anyone who didn't quite have the will or the spirit to get into such games. Soon, a small number of people had begun to mill around, but as with all parties, there's always room for more.

Something about this place scratches at Sarah's insides, like a rusty shiv that's digging at her and trying to get inside her mind, try to make her doubt her surroundings. Four days ago, she'd been on an inescapable island, struggling to cope with the losses that always plagued her life, and in the middle of recovery from her cancer.

Now, she's standing outside a gift shop, numb and motionless, like she's stood every day since she got here. Her attention is on all the metal around her in the form of cameras, in the form of computers, and other electronics that might seem simple to others, but immensely dangerous to her. The cell phone that had been hers, apparently, has been broken apart, pieced together, and hidden in one of the stray guest rooms.

Even the staff here don't seem right, like something is off. It could be her paranoia speaking for her, but there's something about things here that set her heart racing faster and make her doubt that she's made a trade to something better. She cracks her knuckles again and takes a steadying breath, sliding into her seat in the lobby while digging out her notebook. She's been people watching since she got here, taking notes in cryptic shorthand to try and see who's in control and who might know something.

She needs to get back to John and she's heard whispers that it's possible, here. It's nothing more than snippets of conversations about 'going home', but it's enough to keep Sarah interested, enough to keep her from being too bold and making a move. If she's going to get home to John for the first time in over three years, she has to do this right.

Her eyes are intent and steady on the next person who walks in the front door and it's in pursuit of answers that Sarah loses focus as to how long she's been staring, unblinking, unflinching, and unerringly steady. It's the sort of thing that gets you noticed and she jerks her gaze away (too late), hoping that staring too long won't cost her too much.

There's no way this is possible.

Isaac had been on his way to get food, like every other day, and he didn't exactly bother to check whether or not the doors were jimmy-rigged with some kind of weird crap. After all, his werewolf sense have been pretty good about telling him whether or not there's danger ahead. And yet, he hadn't seen this one coming. One minute, he's himself, then the next, everything has changed in the course of five seconds.

"Um," Isaac manages, grabbing his throat when the word comes out high, feminine, and strangled. He loosens his fingers and stares down at his loose clothes and the fact that he barely recognizes himself. Isaac grabs his face and stares in the reflection of nearby glass, realizing that he's not going crazy.

Actually, no. No, this is crazy. Crazy is wandering through a door and becoming a woman. Crazy is this and crazy is the wolf senses inside him going crazy when they don't know what to do with new hormones. He grabs at his hair, searching for a familiar face around him, because this is crazy. Isaac wanders through every damn door he can find, but nothing changes.

This is Beacon Hills level crap and this is supposed to be somewhere where he doesn't have to worry about the kind of crap. Zombies, he can cope with. Rome? Sure. An arena of things trying to kill him isn't exactly awesome, but Isaac can learn how to deal with it. Being in the hotel and turning into a girl on his way to dinner?

"If this is some random wolf crap, Derek did not give me the literature," Isaac growls, tugging at his too-loose clothes with distaste.

The problem with being a vampire, Bella thought as she surveyed the two uprooted trees and pile of kindling at her feet, was that there wasn't ever a break. Maybe the pent up anger, frustration and sadness wouldn't have been as intense if she could have just slept. Just a few hours away from it to reboot or reset herself.

She remembered Carlisle telling her once that vampires felt things more completely, that just as their vision and hearing and speed were enhanced, their emotions were, too. Considering the state she was in now, even days after meeting Adrian, she was pretty sure she knew why. There was no relief from it, just day after day, night after night of dwelling on it.

Today she'd decided to go to her forest, to run, to hunt. To see if she could find something to distract her expanded mind, to get away from seeing that face across the hotel and experiencing the same dashed hope that this time it wasn't someone else.

The run had helped a little, pummeling a few trees to kindling had, too.

But even now as she walked back to her room with twigs in her hair, she knew it probably wouldn't last.

Imbolc had come and passed and Adam had spent it back in New Salem, trying to figure out the key to catching up to his own timeline and vanquishing Black John. He hadn't been successful at all, which was par for the course, but he had come out of it with one distinct advantage - Raj. The last time he'd wandered Crowhaven Road in search of his friends, Raj had come out from behind Laurel's house and whined at him as if he were completely inconvenienced that Adam had left him behind.

Adam wasn't sure if Raj could travel through the door back to the hotel and had been going back and forth to see him when finally he decided enough and he'd be taking Raj back with him no matter what it took; turns out, it didn't actually take much. The German Shepherd had no problems passing through the doorway back to the Nexus and Adam wanted to kick himself for taking so long to even try it. He guessed in some way it had been an excuse to keep going back home even though he couldn't solve the mystery of it.

Today, he and Raj were in one of the gardens. Raj was rolled onto his back, begging for belly rubs while Adam was engrossed in something else entirely. While he wasn't much for divination, it had its purposes and he wasn't terrible at it unlike some in their coven. Diana had been better, of course, but Adam had the requisite amount of patience to get a decent reading with tarot cards if nothing else. He couldn't focus crystals or do augury but this, he could manage.

He drew King of Cups and then The Hermit. King of Cups made sense, Adam himself was aligned with water but Hermit...well. Adam wasn't a teacher. Their coven had no real leader, which was part of the problem, and nobody had ever taught Adam how to wield magic. Most of it had come from piecing together bits of his parents' journals and figuring it out for himself. He hadn't had a lot of formal training.

"Raj, I think I'm getting worse at this instead of better." His dog merely yawned and wriggled a little, demanding more pets.

[[Raj is a German Shepherd and very friendly.]]

After a few weeks in the hotel, Adam had come to the conclusion that if any magic was to be used on the door, it would require a good deal of planning and a day of power. Luckily for him, Samhain seemed to be on the horizon even though it had already passed back home and with that day, he thought he might be able to channel enough power to blow the door back to New Salem wide open.

Until then, he filled his hours with research and the occasional odd job around the hotel to keep him in pocket change. The gardening had been something to fill the long hours when he needed a break from reading and researching and he was in the greenhouse at the moment, a book spread out on his lap (Ancient Rituals of the Druids) and dirt streaked across one cheek.

He had never been particularly self conscious about anything and least of all when his mind was focused on a task.

When he heard the creak of a door and soft footsteps, he looked up, trying to see who had come in and whether or not he would have to vacate his private study place. If it was someone like Bella or Isaac, he wasn't too worried; both seemed to understand how badly he wanted to get home and were people he considered allies, more or less.

"Hey, who is it? Can I get something for you?"

Adam realized this was a dumb question, considering it wasn't a bar or restaurant, but it was out now. Nothing to do but go with it.

Months ago, when the Circle had decided that they needed the Master tools in order to strengthen their magic and come into their full strength, Adam had fully supported the decision and even volunteered to use his summer break to search them out. If he’d known then what he knew now, if he’d known that the crystal skull that resonated with so much power Adam could sense it buried beneath the sand was so tied to Black John that it brought him back, he never would have agreed to go. There was such a thing as too much power, after all, and that skull had been too much even for a full coven and the delicate rituals that Melanie and Diana had devised to cleanse it. Even now, searching for the real Master tools, Adam didn’t know if it was such a good idea. What if they found them and Black John took them or, worse, manipulated Cassie or Faye into using them against the Circle and the rest of New Salem?

There wasn’t enough time to think it through for Adam’s tastes but he trusted Cassie and trusted her visions: even the original Circle had looked to Cassie’s family as the strongest of the twelve. But was trust enough? Was it enough to know how things would play out once they put forth change and altered the future? Adam couldn’t say.

What he could say, though, was that they needed to act fast. Faye was working with Black John to bring the Circle down and there was a storm brewing offshore that would wipe New Salem off the map and take a good chunk of the rest of New England with it. Black John had already killed four people, five if Cassie’s mother didn’t shake off the funk she’d been in since he came back and Adam knew it would only get worse if they didn’t do something. It was on Cassie’s suggestion that they went back to Number Twelve and started digging behind the fireplace. She looked shaken and rightly so; her grandmother had died here, her mother had been scared catatonic here…it was a lot for anyone to handle. Adam wanted to reach out and touch her, comfort her, but they’d made a promise that he wasn’t willing to break, not even in a situation like this.

Adam could feel the hum of power, true power, the second Cassie lifted the box from the fireplace. It was old, solid and when she lifted the lid, he could see the gleam of the real Master tools, not the replicas Diana had used as coven leader. The silver cuff looked heavy, the diadem sparkled like a crown of stars and the garter was made of leather that was miraculously still supple after hundreds of years.

It wasn’t his right to touch them, he knew, but Adam couldn’t help but reach out for the garter and graze his fingers against an object so old and so powerful that maybe, just maybe, they’d stand a chance against Black John and his dark magic. The power that whooshed from the artifact knocked him back and when he came to, there was the grit of sand against his skin and in his mouth. Sand? He’d been blown all the way out of the house, down the cliffs and onto the beach? It was one hell of an artifact, then, and cemented his belief that Cassie had been right about locating the Master tools; no fake would have had that much stored power without some kind of ritual to sustain it.

The power was too much for him and while it was probably dangerous to leave right at this moment, he told the others he needed to get air and would check outside to make sure nobody had come upon the burned-out house. It wouldn’t necessarily hurt to do a perimeter check, especially considering just how dangerous things could become if someone got their hands on the Master tools and intended to use them for evil and he stepped out of the half-burned door with closed eyes, taking in a deep breath in order to calm himself. He didn’t expect much, considering how the ocean was roiling and unsettling him; having Water as a chosen element was more of a liability at the moment than an asset.

But things didn’t seem right. He opened his eyes and saw plush carpeting and the trappings of a hotel, not the eerie and unsettled calm of Crowhaven Road before a killer storm. Confused, Adam turned back to the door and turned the knob, frowning when it appeared to be stuck. That didn’t make any sense, he’d just come through it, hadn’t he? He tried again, bracing himself as he tugged the door and while it yanked open, there was nothing but a storage closet and not the exit back to his own world.

Of all the times to discover new magic, this wasn’t it, and Adam muttered under his breath in frustration as he tried closing the door and reopening it, yielding the same result. The Circle needed him as much as anyone else - a Circle of eleven was crippled and unprepared to face Black John’s threat and it was only twelve, a full Circle, that even stood a chance. There was no way that he could be here instead of there unless...unless it was by design. If Black John wanted to disrupt their power base, he’d done it, and now he had an even bigger advantage than before.

Adam dragged a hand through his hair and took a deep breath, taking inventory of what he had at the moment to start making his way back. This was a kind of magic he wasn’t familiar with, some sort of magic that transported a person across vast distances, and unraveling the exact spell that was used would take time that he simply didn’t have. He kicked the door one last time in frustration and took a little satisfaction in the way the wood cracked beneath his boot but it didn’t really damage the door or make it give way to a path home.

Really, all it served to do was make him concentrate on the pain in his foot instead of the dire situation he’d found himself in and Adam wasn’t necessarily sure that was any better. He was of the very-uninformed opinion that it was not.
